I would like a laptop, it needs to have:

1GB ram 1 chip if possible, 2 at a push (want to upgrade later)
be as fast as possible
be as high spec as possible
cost anything upto £800

Have looked at Dell, but then got told that while they are good spec, everything is tailor made for them and expensive as hell if something goes wrong!!

Asus has been a recommended, but they don't seem that cheap.

All recommendations welcome.

Acer sold by Comet are pretty cheap for the spec you get.

How come they are so cheap??

Are they like Asus who make the laptops for some other major big name manufacturer that just rebadge and ramp up the price.

Acer are the 4th or 5th largest computer manufacturer in the world after Dell, HP, IBM etc. certainly larger than Asus. I've had zero problems with mine. Recommend laptop-shop too. Bought two from them.

Acer are fine If the thing works. If it dosen't then you may have big problems. Their support in UK is utterly chronic. An Acer dealer I know has had a 50% failure rate on machines delivered this year.

Worth considering the new notebooks from Lenovo.

As well as the ThinkPads, which everyone knows, theres also now a new series of notebooks - the Lenovo 3000 series .... www.lenovo.com/uk

I recently bought a Toshiba - decent enough kit and a good price.

Mine was a Toshiba M50-130 Centrino Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHz), 512MB, 60GB HD, ATi X600 with 128MB, 14" widescreen - all for £700. It fitted my requirements of a decent graphics card and light(ish) for as little as possible.

A mate of mine picked up a Toshiba M70 - basically the same spec but a 15.4" widescreen and X700 graphics card (with 128MB) for £720 from shoptoshiba.co.uk - an even greater bargain!

OK, they're not 64 bit chips, but solid Pentium chips all the same. I also picked up an extra 512MB for £34 and I'm well happy...!
