Someone buy Berg's car - it is a brilliant example of a 964 and the best use of 12k or so that you could ever come across. You just don't get 964s much nicer, given their age etc. I know because I have driven it sympathetically around the Eifel mountains on some roads near Adenau, and knew two of the previous owners.

If you're looking for a 911 (LHD) or any Porsche for about 12k, this is honestly as good as it gets.

Hi Bergs, thought i recognised the name from the 'S' forum. Selling so soon? What are your thoughts on owning a 964? I still have the S but am looking for either a 964 or 993 in black or silver (sorry!) and havent been able to make my mind up which to go for. I need to try the two different models out really and form my own opinion, but just wondered how/if you liked it, being an ex-S driver.

Domster, I thank you for your wholehearted bigging up of my splendid motor coz its now at Rolys place (eporsch) its a little more than 12k

how is Dave getting on with the 355?

Hi Jonzo -

Two very, very different beasties -
S2 driving was always an experience - cheap as chips and a lot of fun but felt it too - leaked most of the time - always had little niggles (minor electrics) but not the classic unreliable TVR of urban myth. sold to another PHer (Harry Flashman) who seems to be enjoying the 'S' thing

964 by contrast feels like a thouroughly modern motor - very solid, fabulous handling - very quick - 250 ponies over the back axle makes them a lot more accessible

I used to get 'the fear', as 964s has a reputation for poor reliability (dual mass flywheels failing, top ends leaking and generally being the poorer relation to the 993) - but ownership has taught me that:

1) internet forums are great places to 'talk down' the value of a car.... great if you are buying - not so great if you are selling

2) the 964 in reality is amoungst the last of the rock solid porsches. none of the poor quality issues that afflicts newer models - :dontflamemeimONLYJOKING:

No, in all seriousness the 964 has been a joy to own - I have driven it back to back with a mates 993 C4 and can honestly say I prefer the 964. there is no way the 993 is worth the premium that it commands IMHO (last of the air cooled - blah blah blah....) - as most 964s these days have been through the expensive phase and represent great value porsche ownership

Only selling because I've got to get some renovations done on the house so I have to lose my toy for a while

mine is the 4th one down the list at eporsch

no personal axe to grind here chaps, but I think some consistency is in order here. on the one hand we have one moderator (quite rightly) putting up a sticky to remind people not to advertise in the discussion forum. and then we have another endorsing a very thinly veiled plug for a PH'ers car being sold on a commercial website. c'mon guys, play fair.

WTF?

I am just recommending a good 964 that Berg mentioned was for sale (extremely subtly, I might add, as the site could be useful to other PHers selling their cars), because I know his car personally. I'm not on commission and Berg's post was subtle enough not to fall foul of the forum rules. Berg wasn't in breach of them as far as I'm concerned.

There's no consistency issue as far as I'm concerned. I've been moderating this forum with Daz for long enough to be finely tuned to what's acceptable and what isn't, and this was well within the radar and didn't set the alarm bells ringing.

appreciate the point - but I'd like to make the following:

1) my initial post was fuelled by an observation that there were 9 964s available through the site in question and i was genuinely interested in any mkt information that anyone could add

2) the thread also contains discussion about relative merits of various cars - (that is what we do here isn't it?)

3) like henryf's post to this thread - i would see the contribution as good advice - my understanding of the 'dont post an ad' rule is to stop posts like the one from the guy offering to buy a boxster for 19k the other day....at the end of the day much of what is discussed in forums is around what to buy/where to buy from/whats good etc.

If I'd posted an Ad i'd say fair play but it was genuinely intended as advice to other forum users perhaps searching 964 like I did when i bought the car....

oh c'mon Dom, thats a stretch! the post entitled "964s for sale - time of year?" was nothing more than a link to a commercial website advert! no discussion there at all.

look, i dont care what you do, youre the moderator. And I'm sure Bergs car is luvely. but this advert (and it IS and advert) appears just below a stickie from Daz which states

"Don't just ignore the rules of the site you've just agreed to, by posting adverts on the discussion forum.

WE HAVE A CLASSIFIEDS SECTION"

you posted a link that contained an advertisement for your car, what's the difference?

Yes, you can post some nice text around the link but it's still an ad for your car.

There is a very subtle difference and mods have to use their discretion. I'm afraid to say I used mine. If there wasn't a little latitude this forum would be very boring and unhelfpul.

To give you guys an idea:

- Someone asked about getting hold of a 928, which isn't an easy car to find a nice example of. Henry emailed me and checked that he could post reference to a nice 928 he had in stock. I thought this was helpful to the poster, as well as being a plug for Henry, so it got the green light.

- 9M posts about a new supercharger conversion. Colin is a regular poster and it is felt that people on the forum would like to know about this piece of research and development. So the link stays up.

- There's a track day at Oulton Park for 911RSs. This isn't a freebie, but it's an event in the spirit of PH that lots of PHers like attending and it is therefore supported and they get a sticky.

- Berg posts about a forum where they sell 964s. Could be useful for people either buying or selling, now or in the future. He hints that his car isn't selling this time of year... interesting point perhaps. Maybe he's overpriced the car or other people are having problems.

- A mod knows a lovely example of a car that's for sale, and can vouch for its history completely independently. He doesn't know the seller personally. He gives it his recommendation in case someone wants a cheap but excellent 911. Someone may do.

The classifieds rules are there for people who TREAT THE FORUMS LIKE A CLASSIFIED SECTION. This is to prevent it being bogged down by 'cup wheels for sale, £295, ring dave on 0837 444839' type posts. There is no harm in some of the posts having a subtle classified or commercial content. But it must be SUBTLE. Blatant plugs are not allowed and get taken down. Subtle plugs, if in the interests of forum members MAY be allowed.

We are pretty relaxed and don't overmoderate here. Some moderation goes behind the scenes, ie if someone is taking the p1ss a bit, we will have a word and ask them to stop it or start paying for ads. If we applied the rule of 'no classified content', rather than 'no classified ads', rigidly then this forum would be half as informative, half as much fun and you'd never hear about bargains or good deals. And Henry and 9M would bugger off - and we wouldn't want that, would we

I hope that helps clears things up a little bit. Daz's sticky still stands and I maintain that it isn't inconsistent with what goes on here. It isn't a black and white situation and you should appreciate that. If you have a problem with any of the moderation at any stage, speak to PetrolTed or report abuse. Or try another forum.

wow, Dom, thats some reply - you have too much time on your hands! suggest the order of the day is

when the time comes (maybe Spring 2007) I'll put up a post titled "beginning of spring - a good time to sell a cab?" and the content will be a simple link to wherever Ive advertised (PH of course). I appreciate (in advance) your understanding and approval

Ohhhh I dunno, it might not be a bad thing, it'd give Henry more time to play on his dinghy in the Med when he gets it, and Colin might get some work done and fing ring me back, when I leave a message for him, (with the ever helpful and lovely Christine )

LOL, well if people wouldn't bring moderation up I wouldn't have to waste my time with a reply That said, it is worth showing that moderation is not black and white, nor is it stringent. An awful lot gets left alone because over-moderation historically causes problems. A lot is down to personal judgment and sixth sense, and this may alter from mod to mod. It is definitely fair to say that subtle plugging is tolerated but if it is too overt it will get removed. Don't leave a price or contact details in a post and you can certainly go with 'a good time to sell the cab' post. Another classic is 'thinking of selling, how much is it worth?'. Let's face it, classifieds get missed so a gentle nod in the direction of a classified ad does no harm - assuming there is something of interest to forum members in the post and you're taking a liberty not the p155. A fine line.

Also, I do believe that bargains, nods towards cars to sale and subtle commercial notices can be interesting on the site... if we removed every post that had something to sale, 20-25% of the posts would go overnight. What stuff is worth and where you can get things from is always worth knowing.

Cheers
Dom

Ooops

I was arguing on the phone with someone about rugby when I wrote that post. Honest!

Just to reiterate what Domster said earlier we both try and strike a balance with the moderating on the forum (when we are being paid to work elsewhere!). In truth we could charge in a lot more than we do but tend to just get involved when people are blatently taking the pi$$ out of the rules as opposed to pushing at the boundaries.

hmmmm..... so it's ok to allow your mate to advertise his 964 on this forum by refering to a website and indicating which car on that site was his but when someone else does something similar, it's "Binned".

Would like to see a stop to the double standards on hear once and for all.
