You need to have the right licensing, as its not like a service pack.

Microsoft want cash out of you if you want it...

Oh and I've got pretty much the only OLP media kit in the country as I'm installing today

This has caused us loads of problems, the last few licences we have bought have been for R2 but no one has any media. We have had to phone Microsoft and get older keys so we can install the last version and will have to revisit customers in the future to upgrade them to R2.
