I now have Intel Core Duo iMacs at both home and work, and although I'm very very happy with them for the majority of uses I have for them, I have now stumbled across two software packages which don't run on them as patches haven't been written yet.

The first is Virtual PC for Mac, just so that the missus can keep here beloved selection of Rome/Egypt/Sims simulation games.

The second is Hercules Traktor DJing software for DJ Console, relatively minor piece of software but one I was keen on using.

Is anyone aware of any others that don't work yet? Why don't software bods work on a patch as soon as the hardware spec is announced? I know testing has to be done but shirley it doesn't take this long???

The first is Virtual PC for Mac,

That's deeply ironic ...

(Although running one emulation on top of another never was a recipe for success.)

Is there VMWare for the Intel Macs, yet? You may be able to run Xp in a VM on top of OSX.

Problem is that requires a license fo VMWare and an XP license in addition to that... Not cheap.

Apple's own Pro Apps (Final Cut Pro/Express, Motion, Soundtrack & Logic). Updates available any time now. Logic update already available.

VMWare Server (which used to be called VMWare GSX) is free. www.vmware.com/products/gsx/

And people *pay* for XP? Good Lord.

Only one I've found so far is the server for my EyeHome thingy (network broadcasting of videos etc.). Not really that bothered as its a bit rubbish anyway. Use my old Mac Mini to do the same job now which is much better with VLC player.

Virtual PC will be a none starter I'm affraid, it's a x86 emulator for PPC... so it'll have a fit when it tries to emulate an x86 chip on.... an x86 chip
I know it's a long shot but you might find that there are OS X MAC versions of those games floating around; running those *should* work assuming Rosetta is up to the task.

Never heard of the DJ thing but it's generally not my scene anyway. Check their website to see if they've got a universal binary out or if they have some hints for getting it going under OS X's own emulation system.

And please, don't call me Shirley

Hercules themselves suggested I send it back for a refund as they don't envisage having a patch ready for a few months yet.

Just bought Mrs Wanty Sims 2 for Mac and that's keeping her happy for now!

If you belive Macworld, it looks like you could always just install XP as well as Tiger!

Yep, you can boot XP but there are no drivers for the graphics card in them yet, so you can't play games yet.

Probably, the imac's have a ATi unit so I'd guess it's just going to be a patch to the latest Windows drivers to make them recognise the 'tweaked' ID of the MAC units. I'd wager other than a rejigged ID string being reported the actual innards of the 3d chip are going to be remarkably standard
