Factory Technical Bulletin #9305 of April 15, 1993 "Retrofitting of 18" wheels on Porsche vehicles which do no have 18" wheels as original equipment is NOT ALLOWED (bold and underlined!).
The factory says that endurance tests have shown that equipping certain Porsche vehicles with 18" wheels in an application not already approved by Porsche Cars may result in loosened bolts and/or threaded connections on the front wheel carriers. This, in turn, may cause fractures in these components. Fractures may also occur in the front strut mounts and in the body in the area of the rear suspension as a result of the installation of 18" wheels.
Such damage can occur without warning.
This bulletin applied to ALL models of cars.
Also of interest is Technical Bulletin #9303, September 28, 1993, which deals with the fitting of 17" wheels and tyres to 4-cyl models from 1987 onward, 944, 944S, 944T (all with M30 option), Turbo S 1988, Turbo 1989, and S2 from 1989.
Fitting of 17" wheels on vehicles previously equipped with 16" wheels is allowed, however you should also replace the caster adjustment parts so that the alignment can be adjusted for the proper caster angle of 3 deg 15-45'. The parts needed are:
Rear Mount 951 341 023 00, 2 each
Eccentric 951 341 431 02, 2 each
Bolts, 4 each
The 951-341-023-00 part has been superseded by the -01 part. There is also a 968 Club Sport part available, 951-341-023-30. The upgraded 951 part is also used on 968.
There is a huge difference between it and the stock part.
The stock mount has a LOT of rubber and only a thin metal cover around it, like that used on a antiroll bar. The upgraded part has just a thin rubber insert with a substantial metal piece around it.

Basically a yes/no and maybe.
1> no there is a TSB saying this is wrong... but this is for the US cars (they have a different ride height)
2> yes: AS LONG as you make sure the rolling diameters are the same, bigger wheels lower profile tyres
3> maybe: you takes your choice.
My home PC crashed so I could not update my website.but I've done a shed load of research on this hope to have it online soon

Have done my homework and had so many conflicting responses from various porsche enthusiast.- Now I am really confused !!!!!
So far I have picked up the following recommendations:-
1) Dont touch replicas! - only genuine Porsche wheels
2) It is not recommended to put an 18" wheels on a 944 cab - 17" Ok?
3) Genuine Porsche Wheels from a 991, 993,996 or Boxter should fit staight on to a 944 Cab if:-
4) The wheels are genuine & the Offsets are between ET50 -55 ?
5)Max 255 tyres will fit, however it is recommended to go no more than 245?, However I am yet to spot 17" wheels with 245 on they all seem to be 255 rears?
6)If I was to have 255 tyres with 17" wheels I would need spacers at the back?
In short I have a 944 1989 S2 Cab & I am wishing to upgrade my wheels from 16" to 17"! Most of the 17" wheels I have spotted tend to have 255/40/17 rears & 205/50/17 front ie

I have 17" wheels on mine using 255/40 x 17 at the rear and 225/45 x 17 at the front. The tyres do not rub at all so these sizes should be ok. These tyre sizes were fitted to the 968 so I would assume are also the optimum size for the 944 if using 17" wheels. The need for the suspension mod mentioned above probably depends how hard the car is used. If tracked at all,or driven hard, definitely worth doing IMHO. I have seen 18's and even 19's on a 944 but 17's are probably the best option bearing in mind the TSB and give a good compomise between looks/ride/handling.

As I said the 18" TSB was ONLY for the US market, the ride height of the cars is lower, so it is effected.
You "could" use other wheels but you MUST make sure that the overall diameter stays the same use the below link to check

Well the wheels arrived today 17" 255 rears 205 front.....& yes they fit perfectly. Perhaps if I had a huge amount of weight in the boot ( not much chance as it isnt that big!) & decided to corner madly at the same time I might find the rear tyres touching the rims. All in all delighted they look fantastic. A big thank you for everyones advice .
