Watched a few minutes of the program on BBC1 last night regarding policing of drunks, "Drunk & Dangerous" I think it was called. I was shocked at the heavy handed, and sometimes downright violent way, the police handled members of the public. A number of passersby also seemed shocked, and even upset, by the methods used by the police.

I watched this and thought they were just doing the best they could under the circumstances .

"best they could under the circumstances " - hitting in the face some-one who was a bit slow to step back when told?
Which town was this in? I definitely will avoid it at night. The police seem as much of a danger as the drunks.

I did not see them hit anyone in the face but they are doing a job and the Scum were trying to stop them , fair play i say

Dealing with drunks is harder than you think. As soon as you drop your guard they take advantage by punching biting spitting etc. Ive seen it all over the years and ive been vomited on etc.

The only safe ones are flat out drunks but even they need special care because if the injure themselves or even die then its percieved that its your fault.

As you know, once a person has had a few beers they are volatile in different ways.

Women drunks, well lets not go there because they are a different ball game altogether.

The whole situation didn't look to be a very nice place to spend a Friday night.

Interesting comment right at the end, that actually the new licence laws have reduced voilent incidences by around a 5th without increasing drink sales. People appear to have just shifted the times they go drinking and spread it out over a longer period, coupled with the fact that those of a violent intent are not all being turfed out onto the streets at the same time.

Funnily enough pretty much exactly as predicted on PH before Christmas, and at complete odds with the doom and gloom in the media.

I saw the program and indeed the bit you refer to about 'slapping in the face'.

Quite frankly, I was PLEASED the poilce acted the way they did. It seems as though the police can do nothing right; they are forceful, people react like the original poster. They hold back, it's "stupid rules and regulations".

Police need to exert their authority. They did that very well in what can be described as very difficult circumstances. IIRC, the guy he pushed away last night was a friend of the guy they had on the floor and was being aggresive towards all the police, and was approaching them in an aggresive stance. A quick push back (NOT a slap or punch, he pushed him; big difference) and the guy came no closer. If the policeman hadn't have, there would have been a fight.

So, to the original poster, be glad that they do that.

So which town was it?

I should make it clear that I am not anti-police. When living in Cheltenham mates & I twice stepped in to assist policemen heavily outnumbered by gangs of youths.

Yeah it's fair to say most night-club towns have scenes like that. It is worth pointing out that, especially the Wrexham scene, was "big Friday", which is the worst night of the year. The friday before Christmas!

Just my final comments. I have sympathy with the policemen who have to deal with these situations night afte night. However, I suspect that they cease to see individuals but just 'types of people' that cause the police problems. Perhaps they then deal with an individual on the basis of how others have acted. An understandable human reaction but rather hard on an individual who is dealt with as the violent troublemaker that he may not be. When I see scenes like this I wonder why some folk even consider a night out with the chances of this happening - I'm showing my age!

Alot depends on the sort of person you yourself are, I think. I am 25yrs old and regularly go out, all over the place. It is so so so so so rare for me to see these scenes. Why? Well I think it's because I'm sensible. Plane and simple.

You saw last night 15minutes of an 8hour night out in Wrexham with, say, 50000 people. People like you or I could have had an amazing night (and often do, though I've never been to Wrexham) and never seen or heard of any trouble at all.

Not so. "police figures" show that the new licence laws have reduced voilent incidences by around a 5th. Don't forget government figures showed that foot and mouth was eradicated just before the election, only for it to return soon afterwards.

Obviously they would come up with some figures that show their senseless meddling has worked, whether it's worked or not. What it's actually done though is spread out the whole thing and caused us taxpayers a yet higher burden having to police these scum all through the night.

I may look a little out of place in a night club - I'm 59!

St Albans

Crikey! Didn't think we had the sort of problems that usually get shown on these TV shows round these parts. Usually a pretty friendly place to go out for a beer or 3 - although I suppose its down to where you go....

Is this show repeated at any point?

Northampton was also featured, in the scene where the chav in the tracksuit was arrested (at the bottom of The Drapery for thse familiar with the area), followed by his 17 year old chav girlfriend.

I particularly enjoyed the bit where he was on his arse, handcuffed and shouted to one of the officers "if you weren't a copper I'd in' kick your 'ead in..."

As much as I hate Northampton and can't wait to leave, I think the scenes shown must be pretty representative of most busy towns. My home town in Northern Ireland's much the same at chucking out time. I've never relished it, regardless of what town I happen to be in.

I do feel sorry for the Police at times like this. I certainly couldn't put up with some of the crap they take and not be heavy-handed.

It must also be pretty sh!tty working in the local kebab shops/taxi offices at these times too. Would you do it? I wouldn't. That's just reminded me - I'd never seen a doorman at a McDonalds until I came to Northampton!

Infinite infinite patience is what I saw. The only bit that did look unreasonable was as they were dispersing people after a club closed early they locked up a chap (with the girlfriend) for swearing twice, it looked to me like the copper didn't want to look a fool on TV.
