Heated mirrors - dumb question

I think I have them but they are not mentioned in the owners manual. The drivers side mirror glass fell out not long after I got the car (dodgy repair by previous owner after a whack I think) and when I put it back I noticed the element on the back and a pair of wires. The dumb question is how do I turn them on. Is it the little joystick/switch. I noticed that if the switch is in the centre pos and I poke the joystick I can hear a relay. Is that it, if so I think mine are bust.

Depending on the car they can be on when the ignition is switched on, on when the blower fan is activated or not connected....
