Is a Boxter reliable?

This message is for a friend. He currently owns a cerrbera 4.5. It constantly breaking down. I have suggested he get a boxster s. Is there any reliability issues with boxsters I should make him aware of?

Yes.

When brand new they can have niggles. To be fair Porsche sorted out both my BoxsterSs without charge and reasonably quickly - I got a decent hire car during the trouble. My second car was a right shed for the first year. Other people I know have had NO trouble whatsoever.

Since then the car has been rock-solid reliable and runnable on a £2K maintenance a year. And I TRACK the car REGULARLY! If you don't then halve that. Insurance is reasonable (say... £500 - £800).

The main horror story is RMS - an oil leak. Can be trouble to fix. A £725 annual official Porsche warranty covers it.

Running costs vs a Cerbera? Should be a lot less. Should be a good deal more reliable. That's not absolutely guaranteed, of course, but it's likely.

Three year old low mileage cars now represent a performance bargain.

Very RMS is not really an issue, despite what you might hear. If you were to have it changed when the clutch is done as a precaution it's only about £60.

There's no known RMS issues on the 987 as far as I know, if that's what he's looking for. I've had my car for 10 months now, it's never been back to the dealers (a speaker could do with being looked at, but I can't be bothered taking it back for this alone) and only had about 1/2 a litre of Mobil 1 in that time. It's used and exercised regularly.

Mines reliable it gets used every day and runs the 6500rpm limit all day ...it doesn't use any oil or water , i suppose it's similar to buying any make of car, there are lemons and good motors, just because a car has a FSH or low milage it doesn't mean to say it won't let you down the next time you use it...i'm lucky my friend owns a garage and deals in Porsches and Ferrari's so anything goes wrong with mine like RMS its not a worry....if you can get a OPC to give a warranty then all the better good luck
