I still can't watch the screen of my pc without having my eyes hurting after 10 min.
I haven't found a decent comfortable set up and the repetitiveness of white everywhere is a pain.

My question is:
Did/do you have the same problem?
If yes how did you solve it and how?
Are special glasses worth a look, etc.

What refresh rate is your monitor running at (the higher the better)
You could try an LCD panel - they tend to have different characteristics (which mean more "smear", but less eyestrain)
In terms of Monitors, the Sony Trinitrons are pretty good (you can tell a Trinitron by the 2 lines that run horizontally across the screen, about 1/4 the way down & a 1/4 the way up from the bottom

Have you changed the default colour scheme of all of your windows? This may help...

Try changing the refresh rate.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display

Now select the monitor tab and you should be presented with a drop down of available refresh rates. Depending on your software you may also have an option entitled optimum. Select this if available, other wise try out the different rates and see what works best with you.

Thanks for the advices

I increased the refresh rate from 60Hz to 75Hz (max) but it is no better.
I already wear glasses but I'll have a look at some "pc glasses".

If upping the screen refresh rate didn't help, you could try a monitor reset (usually shown as a dot between two inwardly pointing arrows) - if the brightness has been set too high this can cause glare. Also check the convergence setting and recalibrate with controls on the monitor. If this is out the characters will be slightly fuzzy and will lead to eyestrain since you will end up sitting closer to your screen to compensate for the poor readability. How old's your monitor?

My current settings:
Refresh rate: 75 Hz
Brightness: 20
Contrast: 50
Screen: Iiyama 17", 4 years old

I suspect the graphics card is the limiting factor for the refresh rate. My 17" Iiyama can do more than 150Hz at 640x480, 120Hz at 800x600 and 100Hz at 1024x768

I've also got a 17" Iiyama LCD monitor and the picture is about the same stability on both. Well the LCD is a bit better, but theres not a lot in it.

Can you give us the model numbers of both the monitor and the graphics card?

- oh, and what Operating System too....

The screen is an Iiyama 17" S700JT1 and the graphic card is a GeForce DDR 2 (AFAIK; I couldn't give you the exact number as I threw away the box).

a tip that the optician said to me was make sure the background lighting in the room was brighter than the monitor brightness.

the logic behind this is that the more light entering you eye the easier you eye has to work to read the information etc.

Thom, you may want to download a later driver for your graphics chip:
www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I don't think the driver is the problem, but it could help.

I think I was wrong about the graphics card being the limiting factor. The S700JT1 is the cheepo Iiyama 17" model, and can only do 75Hz at 1024x768

Try knocking the resolution down to 640x480 and raising the refresh rate as high as you can, see if that improves things. If it does, then you need a better monitor.

I find that at 75Hz I can still see flickering, whereas at 85Hz it goes, and 100Hz is better still.

85Hz with the brightness turned down, so that whites are slightly grey, is an acceptable compromise on my monitor at work.

If you can see flickering at a frequency of 75 Hz then you must be inhuman...where's your blue cape and tights?

Well, I'm glad to find out I don't need a new monitor
But then it really is awful at 600x800 and I'll keep it at 1152x864 with low brightness (20) and medium contrast (50), 75Hz being max refresh rate available at this resolution.

It's not so much that I can see actual flickering, but the screen just doesn't look stable. Difficult to describe, but I can usually see if a screen is refreshing at less than 85Hz and it hurts my eyes.

If the screen is *unstable* then the monitor is probably f&*$£d. Best thing you can do is beg, borrow (or steal) a monitor to try in comparison. At 75Hz the picture should be rock solid, if it isn't then something is most definitely wrong.

The only other thing you might look at is the colour registration in case the guns are out of alignment, this causes the image to go slightly fuzzy which makes it very hard work to use.

Not true unfortunatly. I'm one of those people that can see flicker all the way past 75Hz and it only becomes stable at 85Hz.

I've been through Iiyama Vision Master Pro's (21") and a few others before I stopped on a P1100 (21") from Compaq (Trinitron) running at 1600x1200 at 85Hz

The best thing to do is to pop into a local PC World or similar and look at all the monitors until one doesn't flicker. Then ask the assistant if you can use the computer (they are generally locked nowadays) and check the refresh.

Other things that could be wrong are probably in the 100's - best thing is to get out and find one that doesn't hurt and then see what the settings are and what type of monitor is.

I presonally can't use anything expect a Trinitron nowadays - and I typically spend 7-9hours a day in front of a screen.

Are you telling me you can't sit in a room with fluorescent lighting? or watch an LED train station arrival-board? or just plain watch tv?

If yes to all the above then I believe you are superhuman, but if not you just had bad luck with monitors.

All of the Iiyama's I have used in the past few years have been Trinitron screens and I agree they are definitely the best option.

Also have to question the sanity of using 1600x1200, the 21" monitor you have may well be capable of it (my 19" monitor is) but you have to be sat so far back from the screen that the pixel definition would be too small.

I love having acres of screen real-estate but having experimented a lot with different configurations I settled for something a little more modest

Nope - I can't stand normal flourescent lighting - it has to be CAT2 or better. CAT2 uses the fact that flouresent lighting has a hysteris curve of reaction to the AC input and combines two or more tubes plus various clever mirrors and reflectors to ensure you always "see" two or more tubes lights but slightly phased to smooth out the lights.

LED train arrivals typically use 1000Hz or better matrixing (I know - I used to design such systems when I worked for GEC-Marconi) and so don't have the same problems (hint - they work off *DC* not AC.....)

TV - yes, very early on I upgraded to a 100Hz TV, and for the single 50Hz TV I have I only use in the bedroom late at night with the lights off/low and the contrast down to almost zero. Even then I can't watch an entire film on it without having a break.


Also have to question the sanity of using 1600x1200, the 21" monitor you have may well be capable of it (my 19" monitor is) but you have to be sat so far back from the screen that the pixel definition would be too small.
My resolution of my eyes - particularly close up is excellent. The P1100 actually has 1800+ physcial phosphors across its width and so 1600 is fine (line resolution is actually not really relavant as the phosphors are "longer" than they are "wider" - the 1200 is just to ensure that I have "square" pixel screens.

I actually have a twin monitor setup - giving two screens where I can drag from one to the other, and I'm just thinking of adding a third as I still find that limiting
