Hot cats melting things under the bonnet

Sorry guys - another query:

The Griffith I looked at yesterday had once had an alarm fitted and it was mounted on the front of the chassis cross-member, in front of the cats. The cats had got hot enough to melt it. Is this normal? If they melt the plastic alarm box, wouldn't they also melt the bonnet??

Should I view this as having been (or still be?) a fault with the car overheating, or do the cats simply get very hot and the car electrician that fitted the alarm didn't realise this?

Anything plastic within six inches of the cat is going to melt.

Its not a place they are normally mounted they are usually further away from the cats, Wont delvuge more on an open forum mail me if you want?

Just checking they all get that hot and that it doesn't normally cause too many problems - so long as you don't mount plastic things too near them!

Well the radiator fans and steering gaitors are quite close, as are the suspension bushes and... I've fitted my Mod-Wise temp adjuster there, but yes they do get very hot! Rich...
