I have a huge collection of moves and mp3's. Thing is that they are all on my computer's harddrive.

I have a two bedroom place which I want to make an audio/visual paradise!

The computer will be in my bedroom and the tv (to be purchased, watch out for a new thread when the time comes!) which will be LCD or Plasma will be in the living room.

Bedroom - Computer with all the data plus speakers.

Living room - TV and speaker systems.

Question: How do I play the music and videos which is on my computer (which is in my bedroom) on the TV and the speakers in the living room!

I want to get a set of logitceh speakers, the z-series and connect it to the tv to have truly epic sound. Want to play my mp3's through the same speakers.

Is this doable on a reasonable budget!? Hyperlinks to goodies much appreciated, will save me oodles of time on searching!

Thanks guys, if anyone will know...

You could look at the new intel Mac Mini, its unobtrusive and looks nice. Also it now comes with frontrow, which is media centre software with a remote. Couple it up to a wireless network and you could stream all your media from one computer. On the speaker front I wouldnt go with logitech. Either hunt down your local HiFi store (not currys etc) or if you are on a budget I would look at Richer Sounds, £200 should get you an OK surround set up which will blow any logitech stuff out of the water in terms of SQ and volume.

www.ugo.com/channels/tech/features/logitechz680/default.asp

I was thinking of this...

My budget is about £400 for the speakers and the unit that will receive the data from my main computer. Any suggestions?

The tv screen will be more!

Thanks!

You want an XBox 360 with a media centre pc!

My Xbox streams mp3's and photos from my pc from my iTunes library and gives you a similar interface to an ipod so you can play albums, artists, songs and genre's. With a WMC pc, you can also stream wmv's.

Does the xbox allow you to play the music from your computer through the speakers it is attached to?

In an ideal situation I would like to be able to scroll through my computers harddrive on the tv and then play it through speakers.

An idiots guide to the answer is always appreciated.... perhaps even necessary!

Great bit of kit.

The xbox will output to whatever it is attached to eg. tv speakers or your home cinema kit.

Another vote for Sonos it is a fantastic way of playing your MP3 collection wirelessly and it is so easy to use and set up. I have had mine for 6 months and to coin a phrase "I'm loving it"

If you wan't to go wireless to stream your video and also perhaps to view your piccies on the new Plasma then this is a good soloution at a reasonable price :

Or if you want super cheap try this

Pinnacle Showcenter on Ebay

Or the latest version

Show Center 200

I've got a sc1000 (cheap off Ebay) connected to PC in bedroom via cat5 cable. Connects into AV amp and can play DVD's (or any video format) in 5.1 surround sound, mp3s and can also display photo's on your telly.

Only downside is the user interfacde is a little cluky and not exactly flash but it does the job for very little money.

Thats very interesting...

Not wireless though is it? With the PC in one room, it would be difficult to wire this all up no?

I've got one, and it is very good. However it's music only, won't cater for your video needs.

The only problem with the XBox and Media Centre set up is that the movies have to be wmv files, but I believe that there is a "fix" to allow you to stream divx.

Must be a way of making it stream video surely? Patch or something?

Not as far as I know, forum is here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/

There are other media adaptors that do both, like this for example:

Not with that hardware - there are no video outputs on it. There's optical and coax digital outs which I guess, hooked up to the right hardware (a video D to A? I've no idea....) it might be possible in theory. I don't believe it's something that Slimdevices are persuing and have not heard of any thrid-parties developing something.

Squeezebox is just bloody great - I've got 3 of them!

I've tried loads of the current wireless MP3 players and it beats EVERYTHING hands down. Sonos looks a bit flashier (especially the WiFi remote - sublime) but for functionality and quality, for the price, as MC Hammer says, you can't touch it.
