Can anyone recommend some good drum machine software for creating rock/indie/heavy metal beats - bass drum an essential . Also, is there any decent freeware out there which would do the job?

Personally I use Steinbergs Groove Agent (but you need a VST or ReWire compatible host) as this does everything for quick and easy drum beats. If I want something more custom, I use Reason. Or if I want to be a bit less techie, I program up the SR16.

Groove Agent is good though, it's patterns get you started very quickly.

Ahh.... Reason... Many many hours wasted on that wiring up combinations of drum machines, filters and compressors. Never produced any music of note but had a great time anyway!
