Not wishing to put too much of a dampener on your find dern but would you really want to put your trust in a helmet that costs £35.00 new and gloves at £12.99??

I certainly wouldn't! Locks & Rainsuits ok but not your basic kit.

Aside from anything I would have a huge distrust about people who operate bulk wholesale offering what I deem to be a specialist market's products....

Remember when Asda or Tescos sold scooters?..... it was a bit of a flop and IIRC it was due to the fact that licence/insurance/legalty/test questions proved far too complex for their staff & people were reluctant to purchase them without knowing the facts....

I think I'd be as likely to buy a lid from Aldi as I would to buy buy a rollcage from Lego.

If the lid meets the safety standards of any other lid then it'll be as safe as other lids that meet the same standard. I wouldn't buy it on the basis that it wouldn't have as many creature comforts but on a safety basis I would if I was on a budget. The gloves are a different matter as there's no safety standard. However, if you're currently riding around on a ped with woolen gloves on they would be a better alternative.

Dern, The safety standards are a minimum requirement, it does not mean that all lids are equal in safety terms. The better quality lids are more expensive and exceed the standards. It maybe ok to use a cheap lid on a 50cc scooter, but you may get hit by something faster! Personally, I prefer to invest in my head protection, and the rest of my gear come to that.

I have an issue of Bike magazine somewhere that tested a range of helmets from various manufacturers and at various costs. The results were surprising with SOME of the cheaper headgear out doing the expensive stuff in some of the tests they did.

Have you got any evidence to back that up?

Then how come you’re allowed to race in some EU approved lids but not others? The standard is a minimum and often exceeded. Also I would not trust my life to a helmet that has been through an Aldi warehouse if it cost £350.

Wearing budget gear is better than a tracksuit though.

There are different standards as I understand it.

Fair point.

VFM? I SHOPPED AT LIDL

I bought a brilliant windproof balaclava, and a kidney belt, for less than five of your English pounds (each) at LIDL today...actually I bought some other stuff, too, but the named items are unquestionably good value and aren't 'safety critical.' (The things on the Aldi site look suspiciously similar to those at Lidl.)

New boots are better than trainers. Gloves are better than my more expensive name brands and are rather warm. I'm rather pleased and the money I saved is going into my piggy bank.

Life has taught me that you don't always get what you paid for. And intelligent shopping can be very rewarding. It's a sort of hunter/gathering, see?

The Byrds had a song with a line like

"...as through this life you travel, you'll meet some ??? men
some'll rob you with a sixgun and some with a fountain pen."

Plus, the branch is in BRIXTON, and I'm still alive. (see some other threads at the Gassing Station.)
