I read in the honest jon, that moisture contamination can affect gear selection. My Gear box feels tight with no play or noises. however when it is cold 1st and 2nd are rather tight, then regardless of temp., third can sometimes be impossible to get. It is not that it grindes it just won't go in with out a wobble of the stick first. I know the linkage could be wrong but it all feels good from the top.
Also when I last topped the gear box up a bit leaked out and was a creamey colour, prehaps emulsification.

Any ideas???

A lot depends on what oil you've got in the box. Gear oil, relatively thick, does lead to crunchy changes when cold unless very careful (going from first straight to third can help). Does sound like the linkage needs a look at. You can also adjust the side-to-side play of the shift lever - its in the Haynes book. As for the oil colour, creamy is not good - I would change it - there's some discussion about what's best, some people use ATF, some belive thats no good, using gear oil, or, as I have, lightweight engine oil. Castrol SMX seems to be well regarded as well. You want to avoid anything with high EP additives, as its not needed for this box, and can harm the metal of the synchro's? I believe.

I use a mixture of engine oil and ATF 50 / 50. Can't remember how I arrived at that. I do know that rover gearboxes should not be filled with conventional gear oil, as this makes gear selection nearly impossible.

Guys this is great news I have been so worried that I was going to need a rebuild. i am of to drain the oil now!!!
