In a village near me, Jacobs Well(Guildford), some locals with clipboards have recently been given Radar / Laser speed detection guns.

Can the information they collect be used to prosecute or is this just a ploy to 'involve the community'.

Cheers
Brian

Three warning letters I believe Marlboro, but I really do fear for any civilians safety who chooses to point those things at motorists in our present society which see's the battering (nay.. the killing) of passers by for FUN, or at most, a MOBILE phone.....

Would YOU let YOUR granny do it?.........

9 ... 9 ... 9

"Emergency. Which service to you require?"

"Police, and quickly! There's some lunatic with a gun pointing it at passing cars in Jacob's Well."

Trigger arrival of ARU (who'll probably register at well over the speed limit).

It's an evolution of care in the community called 'how to come out of the closet as a gullible nerd with few friends but too much time with nothing to do and a desire to seriously p155 off everyone in the neighbourhood'.

While wearing a hiviz jacket, a hairdryer and a clipboard, and inflating your own sense of self-importance in comic buzzlightyear stylee.

Blimey! I'm about a mile from Jacobswell. Never seen them myself. Must say it is quite sad. Probably due to the fact that the BiB no longer respond to locals requests for speed enforcement. If enough people whinged to the local nick we used to go out and fly the flag, stick on a few motorists (usually locals!). Now we send a polite letter if the area complained about is not a casualty reduction site.

You are right! I am guessing this story has come from a local paper with a report such as 'locals are so annoyed with the plod's response to speeding they are taking matters into their own hands'.

I am thinking, what would happen if their antics actually caused an accident? Would they be held accountable?

Similarly isnt it an offense to point or aim something which looks like a firearm in public!?

I plan to install a third washer jet that pumps week-old cat p1ss. I shall then aim this jet sideways, and use it on these plonkers.

That "ray gun" is a Remington Big Shot Plus hairdryer. It just so happens that my wife has one, which I have never ever used for "heat shrinking" electrical insulation or for drying damp out of carpets, no sir, not me... (It's bloody good at it though... allegedly)

I should hope not - road designers have to (legitimately) measure vehicle speeds regularly to calculate 85%iles (see separate thread!) to meet the right design standards and I haven't heard of any being arrested yet.

I thought they used the rumble strips for that to get a wider reading over all times of day?

The differerence also is that the road designers have a legal and legitimate reason for doing what they are doing.

Well you can do it that way but it's not as accurate - the speed gun is better (yes I know it might not be accurate either but you have no idea how crude some of the auto-counters can be).

And anyway, legitimate or not, it's too late when some nitwit mistakes you for a do-gooder and sprays you with cat-pee (see suggestion above)!

"Larry, Curley and Moe never did get the hang of this "speed gun" lark."

Edited to add: If someone crashes as a result of these stupid feckwitted morons, then i hope the law is used to its fullest extent to prosecute each and every one of these nanobrained macrohead muppets.
