Rev Counter running at precisely half speed.
Discussion
Hi all..
so since the electrical fun of the last week, now the rev counter is only reading at half speed ie 2000rpm showing on the dial is 4000rpm from the engine. Studog suggested to me that the Rev Counter might be "coded" somehow for the 8 cylinder engine and that the 4 days or so with absolutely no voltage has made it "forget" the coding and drop back to a more standard 4 cylinder default operating pattern.
As some of you may have noticed, if you buy an aftermarket rev counter, there is a switch on the back to set the engine cylinder number, is there a similar thing going on with mine albeit of an electronic nature ??
Cheers,
Matt

Not aware of any coding on these units.

Would the calculating be done by the ECU rather than the rev counter?
Steve, in the bible, you say (p. 124) "Later cars have a shift light at the bottom but the circutry to make it work is not usually fitted".
1) Wot's a shift light?
2) Matt - has the rev counter been replaced at all in the past - perhaps with a different type?
3) If it relies on pulses from a sensor for the rev counter to operate, I'd suspect the sensor every time - it may have been 'spiked' during the fun last week.
Alternatively, I may be talking complete boks.
Nuffink to do with ECU although the ECU does get an input to indicate that the engine is going...
Shift light is one that that is programmed to come on just before you reach the shift limiter so that the blinding flash of light tells you that it might be a good idea to change gear PDQ. Us racing types use them as we can't be bothered to look at the rev counter all the time. When we get sunburned, we change gear.
As for chnaging the unit... I doubt it as they are all TVR style units and it would look pretty well out of place!
I am guessing that either the coil/ignition module/distributor is screwed and not generating the correct input waveform or there is a fault in the rev counter and the pulse counter is not gettings its maths right.
