Focus ST Diesel?
Discussion
What are the chances? Seeing that Volvo are putting the D5 engine into the S40/V50 and they are on the same platform as the Focus, I was thinking that it would make a great combination.
Continues the 5 cylinder theme from the petrol ST so has a certain harmony there don't you think...
I would rather have a petrol one obviously, but with the company car list being Diesel only, I don't have much choice!!
Anyone heard anything???
Paul.

I would suggest it's a likelihood, but if there's nothing in the press yet it'll be the end of the year at the earliest before deliveries start.
Focus ST-TDCi makes sense, but only if they can fit a suitable engine - the 2.0 is a bit ubiquitous now, so need either the 2.2 or a revised 2.0. 2.2 would tread on the toes of the Mondeo ST-TDCi, so that's uncertain...depends when the Mondeo's due for replacement.

The 2.2 would seem like a more likely prospect, given that it features in the Mondeo ST-TDCI.
Surely it would be easier to fit the 2.4 D5 volvo engine as it is going in to the V40/V50 in a couple of months time... also having 5 cylinders means it actually sounds quite good for a Diesel (I can vouch for this having had a go in a V70 D5) This would give it a good marketing selling point over all it's boring 4 cyl competition much in the same way as the petrol ST.
I reckon Ford are missing a trick if they don't do this... the petrols are selling really well, and they would capture loads of Diesel only company car drivers with this if they put it on at around £1000-1500 more than the petrol...

Ah, but what about Volvo's S40/V50 then?
What's the appeal to buy it over the cheaper Ford?
Sorry, but as nice as that would be, not also forgetting the Mondeo would be first in line for that engine (which asks the same question only of the S60/V70), it's not really likely to be an option.
Oh the imperfect world in which we live.

But if you say that, then why does anyone buy a Volvo over a ford... I think that if they kept a distinction between the two, ie Ford being a sporty set-up in the ST with Volvo offering a more classy refined option, then the two could happily co-exist. Even offer the Volvo S40/V50 with only an auto and the Focus with only a manual.
The Mondeo will be replace soon, so it would be too much effort to engineer the D5 engine to fit, I would think it more likely that the Iosis or whatever they call the next Mondeo will use the D5 or even the 2.7 V6.
What Diesel car would people go for up to about £23k from Ford, Volvo, Vauxhall, Saab, Audi or VW?? That is the dilema I'm facing!!
Cheers,
Paul.

So, the S40 which gave the Focus it's platform is to become an Auto only saloon?
That's as daft as a brush and would kill sales stone dead overnight.
Apart from name and perceived luxury, what else is there that differentiates an S40 from a Focus? The engines.
I drove an S40 recently - terrible. No thought for where the left foot goes when not on the clutch pedal.
The LCD screen graphics looked as if they had been done by a two year old.
£20K for a reasonable spec car? I'll save £3K just by looking at a Honda Civic. I'll get something altogether better for the same money in an Accord Executive or Sport SatNav.
Ford and Volvo have really done themselves no favours by having the S40 as a very poor excuse for an upmarket Focus or alternative to A3/1 Series. The car looks the part externally, but beyond that, it fails miserably.
As for the Mondeo and the D5 engine - not going to happen as it'd cannibalise sales of the S60. So, aside from engines, the only difference between a Ford and a Volvo is.......what?
I so wanted an S60 D5 SE - the handling of which I didn't like when ! test drove one recently. Very nervous and skittish over uneven road surfaces on A class road. God help me on a B class! The Mondeo is FAR superior than the Volvo.
The 2.0D S40 - would hardly pull the skin off a rice pudding. No bang, just an almost linear progression of speed as the revs rose. Similar to a 320/330D - something I didn't like, after having had 4 weeks of Mondeo 130 doing the business at 1.8-2K on the dial.
So, if you've £23K to splurge - ST TDCi or Honda Accord.
Forget Volvos until they decide who and where their market is. It's not where they think it is, no matter how nice the rear shoulders look on them.
Ford has raised their game so well in the past 3-4 years, that they've almost made the Volvo obsolete apart from the badge snobbery brigade. I wish I could tell you to buy nothing but a Volvo, but I couldn't in all good conscience, although if badge snobbery is your thing, I'd have one sooner than any VAG model, Merc, and BMW.
For me it'd be Honda/Ford/Volvo with the first two all but tied. 3 Yr/90K warranty is a big plus for the former, but the ST is a lovely car to drive daily for mile after mile. A recent drive of an Accord Ex had me completely at ease with it inside 2-3 mins (shorter shifter would be better), just like the Focus and Mondeo.
Tough call to be honest.

I am by no means a badge snob, and in fact was coming to the same conclusion about the Mondeo ST TDCi. It's a company car and that's why the list of brands I gave, so no Honda I'm afraid.
I think there would be enough customers for Volvo to sell on snob appeal though if my colleagues at work on the same car list as me are anything to go by!!
Pretty much everyone has gone for an A4 1.9SE or a Volvo V50 SE. No one even looked twice at the Mondeo. I'm going to stand out from the crowd and get one in Performance Blue! Thanks for helping me make up my mind!!

I dont think it would be a case of taking the market away from the Mondeo as if you look at the Focus ST and the Mondeo ST220. The Focus has 225Bhp and the Mondeo has 226Bhp, due to the fact that when the Mondeo was realeased the Focus only had 170Bhp. So there will be a jump in output for the new Mondeo maybe it will get the Mondeo ST TDCi engine.

If I were you I'd either look at spending less on a 1y.o. car (e.g. the ST TDCi loses c.£6-7k in it's first year - new they're c.£22k before options, 1y.o. more like £16k! But this is the worst offender on your list), or go for a VERY nice car - 2nd hand 330d or Saab/Audi V6 diesel, perhaps.

Exactly. I just got an ST220 for £12,500. 2 years old, and with practically all the options. I've seen cheaper ones too. If it's your own money and you want the Ford, don't spend 20K, spend 10-12K.
It's a very nice car though. Does the diseasel get Recaros as standard?

It's a company car, so has to be new, and the car list I have is limited to the marques I mentioned... If I was buying myself, then definitely wouldn't be looking at brand new!!
If it's company car then obviously look at getting the best deal for your money - resale is irrelevant, dealers/reliability slightly less of a concern than private.
First thing to check is whether there's any difference in their car tax CO2 bands (not VED bands), as that'll make a difference to the tax hit in your paypacket. After that, pick what you like best!!!
