hi, i want to update the stero system/+ sat nav on my 996..which at the mo,,just has standard cd that came with it,,,
any recommendations where to go reasonably priced / anywhere south east...- thks in advance-

Take a look at the Becker range.

My 996 came complete with a flashing blue and red (very bling) Blaupunkt unit. It had to go and I wanted something that looked OEM, had SatNav, Bluetooth, MP3 and an Interchanger.

Ended up with the Traffic Pro 7945 and the Silverstone 6 Disc interchanger. Becker make the Porsche units so it looks OEM and the Silverstone sits in the bracket under the bonnet.

Excellent system which runs Blue tooth through the cars audio system and will play MP3 in either disc or compact flash card. It is voice activated although with a cab I don't use that feature much.

One slight disappointment is that it won't take full post codes, only the first 4 digits but with the address it has never let me down.

who provide a fitting service at your home or office. Total bill was about £1200 and IMHO, well worth it.

Ditto the comments about the Becker - great units, but the 7945 is about to be replaced by the Cascade, which is very similar but has a colour screen and stores the navi maps on a CF card rather than CD, leaving the CD slot clear. It also works with the new Becker iPod interface which is a bonus.

Adding front door speakers will make a world of difference to the sound, as they can sound very 'tinny' otherwise, but if you don't want to spend this much (probably £700 for door pods and speakers) then just upgrading the standard speakers makes a big difference. Budget anywhere from £150 - £400 per pair and you won't be far wrong.

We have done lots of 996s and they are great cars for audio upgardes, particularly adding a subwoofer, as the cabin gain really works well on them!

Out of interest.. where does the sub go in a 996? Passenger foot well?

If it goes in the footwell it must be pretty small.

The sort of subs my youngest adorns his 318 with, would fill the complete cockpit and boot of my 996

In a coupe, on the rear shelf, behind the back seats:



In a cab, then either in the rear quarter panels (can squeeze an 8" in there) or in the passenger footwell.

I've a 6'' sub in the footwell, fairly unobtrusive but it transforms the sound.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how much the 6" sub transformed the sound of D3DEDs car. Deffo worth considering.

Looking at a targa, but dont want to lose any space on that whole back seat area - bags for holidays, golf clubs etc..

What does that leave me with to get a fuller sound?

You can install 8" subs in the rear quarter panels in leather trimmed pods which blend in very nicely.



Cost is circa £530 per pair plus fitting.
