Urgent request for a part number/source of part

Bit of a problem while visiting the folks in Cornwall..

To cut a long story short I've got a knackered outer diff mount.. (That seems the right dscription; bolt goes through about a 2 inch diameter rubber bush, metal surrounding the bush corroded through either side). Something felt very bad at the back, limped to a garage, it fell off completely and is now in my coat pocket..

I've the car on ramps at a garage in Looe, but the chap there hasn't been able to source the parts I need and as a result of moving the entire house upstairs to save what we could from the floods down here I've not been able to locate my bible..

Can anyone help with a part number and preferably a phone number/whatever so I can get my hands on the part and get moving again? Had to leave the car 50 miles from home in Helston and both stuck and getting to be late for work..

Just looked up the parts list Iv'e downloaded from the TVR site. The Diff and Diff mounting are both listed from Ford Sierra, the CV joints (Driveshafts) are Ford Granada. The main Ford dealer nearest to you is Vospers at Marsh Mills in Plymouth or Vospers in Truro, they both have Microfisch and may be able to identify for you. Hope this helps.

The diff is listed as being from a V6 sierra, I assume the cradle is from the same. Vospers have a garage at Liskeard which is just up the road from Looe, the parts dept is on 01579 340040. I hope this helps.

I think the diff mount is a TVR special and the comment that the diff is a V6 Sierra covers a multitude of sins as there are about 6 different variations on this. Including diffs that were fitted to German Ford Taunus used only in the Bavarian Region of Germany between the altitudes of 1234 and 2355.6 metres... And they are not totally interchangeable either... Problem caused by Ford changing production and TVR having to use what they could get.

A number of people have bought V6 Sierra diffs and then found out that they don't fit. So chcek and double check and be prepared for the worst.

Thanks Chaps, all sorted now..

Best I've worked out if that the Diff is held in place by a cradle which is bolted to the chasis in 3 places by means of a bracket at each. The rear/centre mount looks like a standard Ford part, (mail me if you want the part number I've got it somewhere..), the side/front 2 are TVR parts.. Peninsula have a stock of the ones I needed, so for £37 I got the pair and an hours labour later at a friendly garage in Looe I was moving again.. One of the brackets had snapped at both ends, the other showed severe signs of wear. The car hasn't done a huge number of miles since its last MOT and I reckon the near side could have failed fairly soon so its worth replacing both if one looks bad.

In case anyone else has an odd and painful sounding noise at the back, its worth having a look at these. Basically, what was happening was as I lifted the clutch having changed gear, the torque was forcing the drive out of line so I was getting a noise that made me think gears were chewing each other up or maybe I'd got some muck in the bell housing. If I dipped the clutch again it immediately stopped and its only that the vibrations were from behind me not in front of me that I thought to look there. The failure happened almost immediately I hit a flood on a main road. I lost traction as I hit the water and as the wheels regained grip the torque snapped the remaining metal holding it all together.

Have managed a hundred miles or so with the lid off today and all seems well. Managed to set off a couple of car alarms in Penzance earlier today so all is returning to normal.. :biggrin:

sorry to resurrect a long dead thread but it seems that having purchased psycoberts old car from silverback mike, I am now suffering the same problem as dr.bert happened to have been describing on this thread..so, now I know the answer to my problem (get new diff brackets) I was wondering if anyone could possibly point me in the right direction as to whom could identify which particular vairation of ford part I need...

You could always give Penninsula a ring, very helpful people, bought my S3 off them. Or try www.tvrcarparts.co.uk I believe they specialise in bits for the S.

I just called TVRT car parts and they took my number to call me back..his first intonation was "ooooooh. that's gonna be expensive"

so, we'll wait and see. I suppose I should really get under the car and have a look but I have a dearth of places to do such a thing. might nip down to tesco and see if I can do it in the carpark

Rollocks.. Cost me £37 for the pair and £50 to fit them and IIRC a quick waxoyl of the underside.

I should think that its possible to fit yourself, jack up the back, put high axel stands under the car and possibly support the diff using a trolley jack. Failing that, any garage thats friendly enought to do a job for cash will probably do it in half an hour at minimal expense. The diff mounts themselves are not pricey at all..

Ought to know. One of the fun things about these cars is that some parts are standard Ford, and others come from all over the place, in addition to TVR own parts. All goes to make fixing them a challenge..
