bike rack on a MX5 mkI

just chopped in my wafty saab convertible for a tuned Elise S160... problem is that mrs ayjay has a Eunos Roadster, so we're a bit lacking in the practicality department!
the problem is that in the summer, we like to take my bike places... is it possible to fit a conventional boot-rack to the eunos bootlid??? (ie. is the lid and hinges strong enough)... or can you perhaps have a towbar fitted (not to tow trailers of course!)... don't really want to blow +/-£300 on a boot rack with bike rack attachment.
