My engineer mate is coming round again tonight, to try and sort this 360 live problem out. He spent 2 hours trying on Sunday but got nowhere. (We did establish with my multimeter that the crosswired cable works though).

The problem is, the 360 cant ping the xbox.

Ive got an adsl usb modem (works)
crosswired cable (tested, works)
360

It worked before on the last PC (on auto detect/settings) but we cant get it to work this time. I even had 2 pc's both with the same brand (same motherboard) and lan plug etc, just cant get it to work on the new pc.

Does anyone have any URL's or suggestions I can print off and give to the engineer when he arrives, on networking a 360?

Does Xbox Live work if you plug it directly into the modem with everything set to automatic ?

Best thing to do is to get it working outside of the network just to make sure it is ok to start with.

The modem has 2 plugs

USB
Telephone

If I connect the modem directly to the 360, settings on auto, it doesnt work. Nothing happens. No lights come on. Nothing. Network status = disconnected (even when I unplug the cable to the PC)

I dont really know what Im talking about as Im not a network guru so forgive any ignorance on my part in advance, but...

I have a desk, PC, modem, 360. Live was working brilliantly!! For weeks! Until the day I got a new PC Only after swapping PC's did live stop working. And before, it worked perfectly with the same modem, cable, 360 etc...

So am I probably right in assuming the cable, modem, and 360 all work and the problem lies elsewhere. Something is wrong with the settings on the pc, somewhere (Id guess) but I/we cant figure out what.

We established a network ok. PC says "Connectd at 100Mbps"

The 360 can see the pc. And the 360 can find the wired cable, the ip, but fails on the DNS

The PC cant ping the xbox though, which my engineer says is the first thing to "troubleshoot" as we wont get anywhere if we cant ping the 360... I dont know if that sheds any light?

i take it from the above the 360 connects to the pc which connects to the modem!?!
Can you not go to pcworld or somewhere and buy a £30 switch (or even a new modem/router) and connect the modem to the switch. Then connect pc to the switch and connect the 360 diretly to the switch to.

I dont know, I could try...

Everything is the same, though. The new PC is the same spec as the old PC (more ram, thats all) same manufacturer, 95% same everything. I just dont understand why it doesnt work Thanks for the suggestion though, I might need to go down that route if I have no luck.

Bob, it's probably kept the DNS settings from the old PC on the XBox, try manually assigning an IP address to the PC, 192.168.0.1 should be fine (it's probably similar to this anyway, unless you have a static IP address setup) take a note of all the other settings there, especially the DNS details (can be found by going into your local area network connection settings and clicking on the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) bit and clicking the advanced tab from the page that pops up).

Once you have all the details you can manually put the settings into the xbox, assign it an IP address of 192.168.0.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 default gateway should be the PC ip address (192.168.0.1) and add the DNS addresses you took a note of from the PC earlier.

This should then let you connect. Drop me an email later if you run into any problems, or if you have a static IP address already assigned to your PC by your ISP, but I can't see you needing that unless you host websites on your home PC.
