Steering Joints

I need to replace the steering rack and steering joints on the Tasmin FHC. I see from 'the book' that I should use a Cortina Mark IV rack, but can find no information on alternatives to the standard joints which I understand are now unavailable. Anyone have a part number or suggestions for an alternative? The nearest I can find is a universal joint in the Demon Tweeks Motorsport catalogue.

I also need to change the rear brake discs on both cars, Anybody done it without removing the trailing arms?

I've upgraded to power steering (Well worth doing IMHO) bit if this insn't for you, I have a good manual steering rack if your after one?

As for the steering joints, try a search through previous threads as there's lots of stuff previously posted.

Best option is to either ask tvrcarparts or send the old ones to RT Racing and they can normally find or recondition your old ones, as they did for me.

I've just finished a PAS conversion and it is well worth while. I now want a smaller steering wheel, 12" if anybody has one going spare.

I got my UJ's from tvrcarparts.
Very nice quality joints much better than the originals, not cheap though, cost £160 for two joints and splined shaft. The joint for the bottom (rack) end was not an exact fit on the rack spline but it clamps up fine if you open out the slot a little.

What kind of rack do you currently have? If it's a manual one I may have a joint that will fit. IIRC the splined shaft on a P/S rack is 11/16" and on a manual it's 9/16" If you post a picture of the joint you are after with diameter of the splined holes I will see what I have got. Cheers Steve

As your steering column is a TR7 Moss do the upper one at about £35-40 and RT Racing for the bottom one which is more expensive as it is a TVR one

Thanks everybody for the info. I will fit a new rack as they are only £30 and put new joints on, better safe than sorry. Power steering would be nice but as the intention is to hillclimb the FHC I prefer the direct feel of the car.
