Test drive today - what to look for

I know I'm only going to get 20 minutes or so in this particular car, and probably going to be the first of many to try. What can I look for to assess it's state engine and performance wise?
It's an 02 with 30 odd thousand on the clock. Logbook says 4.0, but who knows!
