Budget News - £210 Road Tax For "Heavy Polluting Cars"
Discussion
Will the increase in road tax from £170 to £210 for "Heavy Polluting Cars" apply only to new vehicles sold I wonder?
Let's suppose I'm buying a brand new 4.2 litre supercharged Range Rover Sport, I'm afraid 40 quid on top of the £58K list price isn't going to make much differnce is it?
Does Mr Brown think people will rush out and buy 1 litre superminis just to save 40 quid and to save the planet?
Save the planet, buy a Range Rover! Coz when coastal regions start flooding we'll all be needing 4x4s anyway, won't we?!!

I suppose that will mean my 1993 Disco will go up to £210. I could save by buying a newer low emission car that would probably cost me up-wards of £5000 to buy. So, as the tax on my wife's low emission Clio is £85 PA, if I bought similar it would take me at least 40 years to recoup the difference.
Oh yes, then I'd be stuffed for towing my race car trailer and my wife's horse shit trailer over her fields, and the horses would have to go without hay as well.
It wouldn't just be a good excuse to squeeze a bit more tax out of us would it?

It seems that the changes will apply to all post-march 2001 vehicles, as it's just an adjustment of the CO2 bands (which they've done in the past) rather than a new system (as was the case when CO2 banding superseded engine size banding in 2001).
It would be interesting to see how many members of PH will be affected by the new top band for "1%" of cars. I'm betting it won't be 1% of us!
Although I suppose it's not all bad, £40 (or whatever the rise is) is literally nothing on the average fuel tax bill for a year!

That`s it !
£40 extra on the tax, I`ll just have to cancel the SRT8 I`ve just ordered !! ( not )
The whole tax / emissions think is garbage, my current 4.7 Jeep runs on LPG, so emits less than the average 1000 cc eurobox, and the road tax is reduced by a whapping £5 to £160.
oh, and Ken`s tax is also waived, but I would have to buy a £10 licence first !
its just paying lip service to the greens .

The new rates are on the DVLA website.

The new G band applies to new cars registered from tomorrow, however post 2001 cars with high emissions have had a large increase. At least both my cars are pre 2001 so have only a small increase (Boxster S and Mondeo)

I bet the Disco will survive to 30+ years old (as do most Land Rovers) but the Clio will have been scrapped 3 times over within this time - what's the environmental damage of 3 Clios on the scrap heap?
