New level of Car Tax.

From the chancellor :
"Cars with the lowest rate of emissions would pay no vehicle excise duty but the 1% of most polluting cars would pay £210".
So do chims come into this new Tax bracket.
Your current duty will rise by the princely sum of a fiver to £175.
Agree though, its clear as mud!

Just taxed mine today for £170 - saved a sky diver!
Why dont they just scrap the tax disc (it obstructs vision and my new is purple and just doesn't go with cooper green!) and increase the tax on petrol by the equivalent (I know this would be the debatable area) amount....those who drive the most pay the most....seems simple enough and you cant get away without paying it!
Will have to pay the increased amount on my other car though....bugger

Just taxed mine as well for £170. Do we know when abouts in 2001 the new band comes in? as mine was a 2001. I think it may rise to 190 if its after 2001 but the 210 is for brand new cars.
1st March 2001 the tax bands were introduced. Anything registered before this pay £170 (at the moment) if the engine size is above 1500cc and £110 if it is below!

Edit: The only reason 1549cc sticks in my mind is because our Elan is 1588cc which is decidedly "close, but no cigar".

I knew it was a funny cc figure, but couldn`t quite remember.
It was the same for me when they first introduced it and it was 1000cc and below (before they increased it to 1549) and I had a fiesta wich was 1011cc or something like that!

Don't suggest that. First reason: they don't get to check ins and MoT each year. Second: it was already done by MT except because of the first reason they kept the tax disc, lol.

Do they really think that someone going out and spanking a fair bit of wedge on a sportscar with high running costs is really going to be put off by an extra £50 on their car tax? Do they bcks - it's just a great excuse for charging the motorist more fecking money...
Dead right. Channel 4 interviewed a dealer who was amazed government believes anyone spending £30k plus on a 4x4, big saloon or sportscar is going to give a damn over a few more quid on their road tax
. Im going to drive whatever the hell I choose. They can make road tax £1000 and Id still drive a Tiv. If anything this new car only ruling may result in sales of older loony cars picking up. Now theres a plus side!

I agree that Road Tax is really stupid. They should ditch it. Like you say, someone with a car that goes over isn't going to care anyway. Whats that compared with the consumption of a RangeRover??! They should just wack more on petrol!!!! Sadly
You put so much in, its almost like writing a blank cheque anyway. by the way, I joined Greenpeace shortly before buying my Trev a few months ago. (no, really I did!!) A bit of a switch in thoughts I know but I dont use my TVR that much. All my miles are done in my Fabia Diesel at 58-60mpg so I'm helping the effort a bit
I'm sure they could check the ins and MOT some other way. Why not just lower the Car Tax.....

Ahh you see I had to get one this Wednesday as well and was pleasently suprised at how well the tax disk matches the chims colour, lovely shade of purple! Obviously didnt detract from the £170 I just forked out.
Tax should be on petrol, simple. The more you drive the more you pay.

? It is.
Quite. Petrol is taxed at over 400%.
And as for the idea of scrapping the disk, you only have to look at the example of the Irish Republic. They scrapped the disk and put an equivalent amount on fuel. But they still needed to have insurance and MOT inspected, so they retained an inspection and charged an administrative fee. Over the years, the fee went up until it was the same
as the tax disk had been previously. Now they have extra taxation on fuel *and* a "tax disk". Be careful what
you ask for!
Finally, motorists already "contribute" tens of billions in taxation, and get very little of it back (less than
any other Western nation), so I see no good reason why we should pay any more for anything.
