I am planning (or my warranty company hopefully) on having my steering rack reconditioned by the factory. I asked the specialist how long this would take, but wondered if anyone had done the same and how long it took to come back from Blackpool?

If my car has to be off the road, I want to do it when cold rather than miss out on the sparse sunshine in the summer.

I have a perception that when things go to Blackpool, they fall into a black hole and re-appear some months later, but am hoping to be wrong?

Had mine done last service (at HHC). They said it would be a week I think, and it was . Not bad as I dropped it off on a Saturday IIRC so that means strip it, post it, fix it, post it, fit it and hopefully test it in five working days. All this is assuming they didn't just swap it with a previously reconditioned item (which is what I would do).

Wow, I am amazed. Hope this is the same for mine, as I was expecting a month or even 6 weeks off the road.

Recently had a similar problem. My car is a non pas model and I started to get loads of play which ended up causing an MOT fail. I fully prepared myself for a new rack but Hawthorns kindly investigated and discovered that the problem was caused by a seized UV.

May be worth a look if you havent already as this cost far less to fix (around £90)

P.S May see you some time on the A329M, I'l be in the cooper green Chim, probably with the roof down also!

I had my pas rack reconditioned just before Christmas. It cost £240 for the reconditioning before labour (removal and refitting). Tower View removed the rack on the Monday and sent it off to another company who reconditioned it. Tower View got the rack back on the Thursday and car was ready by the Friday. It was all a very painless experience, and the car feels so much better now! I had the top UJ on the steering column replaced and a full geometry check as well and am very pleased with the results.
