I am going to build another 2 pc's soon....going to use ebuyer or overclockers for the parts...rather than traul through the sites trying to make a spec...can I give 2 outlines and then see what you friendly lot come up with

PC1:£500: for my dad, no games, needs simple case, quiet psu, upto date processor , 1gb ram min, no need for games, dvdr and about 80gb hard disk space....

PC2:£700: for me, as per above but as fast as possible (dual core athlon?) with 10k sata drive ? dvdr, extra hd for storage (non 10k?) nicer case and would like to keep it quier too (can you water cool for this budget?)

Can anyone price up a few specs or post what you have recently bought, for my machine I will be playing GT Legends, GTR , and Flight Sim 2004.

PC1: Get him something from the Dell Outlet. They can build stuff far cheaper than you can build something from components. Have a look at www.hotukdeals.com to see what the latest Dell offers are. I could post a link but it might well infringe the terms and conditions. Don't forget to change the support option to 1 year RTB and save £100.

PC2: AMD Dual Core is a good choice. Speed is up to you. I wouldn't get a 10k drive and another drive, I'd just get 2 * 7200rpm drives and run them as a RAID pair. For most games the crucial part of the system is the graphics card. Something like a 7800GT should fit the bill nicely.

Fastest drive you'll find is a Western Digital Raptor SATA 10K - similar speed to SCSCI IIRC

I've had one in my PC for two years now and it's access times are low. I gained quite a few FPS when I installed that. Bit more noisy, though.

They only come in 36G and 74G (or is it 72G?)

They are still the drive of choice for overclockers, although many boost the performance further by using them in a RAID array.

Whilst the prices of drives have generally fallen tremendously over the last couple of years, the prices of these Raptors have remained fairly static.

If you're going to look at Dell, also take a look at www.meshcomputers.com

I considered Dell but could get a lot more for my money from Mesh. Service and Machine have both been superb so far

Yep. I'd forgotten about that one.

They are certainly pricey, though.
