Rocker cover bolts

I decided that after 100k miles the rocker covers are looking a little tired, so I thought I'd sort them out a bit this weekend.

Imagine my horror when I find out they're bolted on with odd many pronged star shaped bolts, kind of like an inverse torx head. I was expecting some nice cap screws

Does anyone know where to get an extracting tool for these bolts from? Or even what they're called so I can ask for the right thing...

Halfords, torx sockets, sorted.

There seem to be too many points for a standard torx.

Sorry, yes, you are right. I made that mistake, bought a rack of half a dozen torx sockets, and they didn't fit. That should have stuck, having wasted money, but it didn't.

What you need is a Halfords Professional Deep Socket, 3/8 drive, 8mm, which is a 12 point socket and fits perfectly. I have the socket and one of the rocker bolts in my hand at the moment. It appears to be part number 364455 if that helps.

They are standard 12 point bolts. Most common sockets at that size are 6 point, but you should have no trouble finding 12 point if you look around.
