Against my better judgement and contrary to a lot of my recent contributions I am selling my 3.2 Targa and looking to buy a Mk1 GT3. The business has gone through the roof this year and I don't want to be an old man in a performance car, so I want it now

Budget £50k max

What should I really be aware of when looking?

What are it's weak points?

I don't mind if it's been tracked most have I guess and I am a realist.

Best advice i can think of is get it properly inspected at a GT3 specialst, somewhere like JZ Machtech or Parr.

Once ofhte porsche mags - think it was 911 & PW recently ran a buyers guide. See if you can get hold of it - if you really struggle i could take a copy and send you it.

Price wise you're probably in between a mk1 and a mk2 - see the recent thread M3 v GT3 mk1 for more info.

Weak points? - if you can call them that, MK1 - some people (with heavy track use) upgrade brakes; weak diffs on some cars, very low down (tho i have no trouble with speed bumps in mine). Mk2 - some say is more compliant, certainly rides higher out of the box. Some see this as a negative. Mk2 has stronger synchros, better brakes.

Drive both versions and see what you prefer. All thats written on paper (or screen) may not translate into what you actually prefer - this happened to me and i bought a mk1.

Do a search on here - there's loads of discussion on the cars.

Great cars btw. Good luck

Ajit.

I'd also post any prospective purchase on here and on the PCGB website if you're a member. Odds are that someone will know the car.

Gary of titanic/PCGB forums is selling his mk1 I believe. Apparently a very well sorted car.

Or you might be getting into mk2 territory at 50k.

Differences between the two are obviously debated ad naseum in the archives, and I can only echo getting Parr or JZM to check the car over before buying if you want a pro to look at it.

Thanks guys I've got a guy who has 20+ years of porsche experience (including le mans works team)who has looked after all my cars and i'll get him to look it over, struggling to understand why some people seem to rate the the mk1 over the mk2 because on paper you would go mk2. I've seen one and driven it Mk1 shirleys-garage.co.uk and it needs new clutch and a few other bits (included in price) cage, air-con and ex porsche press car, only gripe is colour (silver)but i'm not buying it for it's colour.

You should definitely consider getting in touch with Gary Bullen if you want a mk1. Its a CS as well.

Definately get a GT3. I went from an '89 3.2 Sport Coupe to a MK 1 GT3 Clubsport a couple of years ago. Fantastic cars though I wouldn't mind a bit more ground clearance for speed humps, ramps etc.

Geoff

PS That car at Shirley's was used in both Car and Evo's 1999 Car of the Year reviews and won both clocking the fastest time in the Car comparison at Oulton Park (I think a 360M was 2nd). It was also used in a Top Gear video where Tiff Needell gives the tyres a good workout!

Another vote for Gary's very nice Clubsport or as an alternative, Gordon is selling his well sorted LHD Comfort, see ad in classifieds...

I sometimes think this is the best bit about buying a new car, 3 great cars all with something over the others, mileage, history even colour. Am I right in thinking that (without stating the obvious) the key to buying a car like this is how it feels. I tried a few 964 RS's before buying and I bought the one that felt right whilst driving even though they were all basically the same car.
