I've always enjoyed being as independent as possible when it comes to bike maintenance but this is one area where I struggle. I can change tyres on mopeds and motocross bikes using a set of tyre levers but when it comes to sportsbikes with radials I'm stumped.
I've spent the day trying to get a front tyre onto a 17" rim and only achieved exhaustion and a bad mood.
Does anyone else manage to do it? I'm seriously thinking about making some sort of tyre fitting machine out of a potters wheel and some steel tube.

Most bike shops will fit (and balance) a tyre for about a fiver, £7 tops - why bother?

I know what you're saying but I want to be able to do it myself. I think it's some sort of neanderthal urge within me.

there are frames available to fit your own mx tyres that work on the same principles as the commercial tools ,may be worth a look at some mx sites .

your not supposed to use washing up liquid as it contains a lot of salt which will rot your wheels
from the inside !

Thanks for your responses. I think I'm going to knock together a frame to make it a bit easier. I'll make sure I use proper tyre soap too. Thanks.
