Regtransfers often sell the numbers to plates they don't own though!
I had a plate on my car a while back that they advertised without me even having given them authorisation to do so.
Also, how many TVR owners have 50k to spend on a plate??? It's the same price as most new TVRs FFS!

Has TVR1 ever appeared on a factory car? I know TVR 100 has.

This is the oldest money making trick in the book.

A owns 'TVR1'

Company X offers that plate for sale and gets a firm offer from B.

X then goes to A and offers to purchase the plate for a sum significantly less than B was offering. If A sells the plate, X immediately resells to B and marks up a good profit.

If A refuses the offer, then X asks how much he does want - if it's more than B offered, X goes back to B and tells him that the plate already sold or someone has already bid the same amount but not completed the sale yet. However, if B would like to increase his offer, X is sure he could buy back the plate/make sure the sale didn't complete.

This is something that happens with many products .... the key to doing it is to know who owns what prior to your offering it for sale.

Imagine you know someone with £30mill spare who'd love to own a particular Picasso. You also know who owns that same Picasso. So ... you go to the art lover and tell them that you've heard the painting may be on the market, what's he prepared to pay?

You then take this offer, less your commission, to the actual owner and work the same story as above.

With the right collection of phone numbers, a little inside knowledge and a phone it can be a licence to print.

(Just for as long as no-one ever realises what you're doing).

Don't think the factory do own it... careful, that's how rumours start...

I wonder if the seller will throw in a free Sagaris in the same candy orange that the pre-production car was . I might consider it then

Allot of the plates did cost stupid amounts. There was one on there "E1" and it was £500,000. Stupid money!!!

I watched a program on TV about number plates a few years back and the reg '8' was on a Rolls in Hong Kong, this was pre handover IIRC and it was cited as the most expensive number plate (and yes to do with 8 being Special Fried Rice, not the common egg fried )

It went for £250k and DAV1D was £225K, but as above '8' took the biscuit in this competition.

Essex Conty Council have F1 and 1F. They tried to sell F1 recently but it didn't make the reserve of £150k apparently. There were loads of reports saying that Mclaren were interested but it sounded a load of old b#ll#cks to me.

Still good plate if you had an F1 though.

Strange we've just bought a TVR plate that I understand used to belong to the TVR Centre. Nothing as grand as TVR 1 though..
