When I was in my mid teens I met, for the first time, my cousin. A couple of years younger than me, very pretty, I liked her a lot, and she liked me, whenever our families went anywhere together, she was always sitting next to me, stuff like that. Our friendship continued for a few years, but neither of us made any move to take things beyond that. I wanted to, and I'm sure she wanted to, we even used to joke to others about it, but first cousins aren't supposed to get too close, are they, I know it's not illegal but it definitely isn't the done thing.
Anyway, eventually circumstances meant that we were living several hundred miles apart, and we lost touch. I found that a lot easier to handle than being close to her and unable to do aything about it. Sometimes I wonder if I should get back in touch with her, or whether it isn't better to just be able to think about what might have been.
I don't think I'm actually asking a particular question here, but I wonder if any other PH'ers have been in a similar situation ?

John. If you're single then get back in contact. If you're married etc then forget it. Temptation etc

Have always fancied my first cousin. Don't see her often but she always gives me a special smile. If circumstances were different I would probably check it out.

It's perfectly legal to marry a cousin, if that's what you're asking, though slightly "banjo country / Forest of Dean" IMO. Probably better for the gene pool if you look a bit further afield.

I once fancied my first cousin, I was a bit tipsy, as was she and we were spending the night dancing, very closely, to every tune the dj played (including the not dance closely ones) but she said that her father (my uncle) was not really her father but was not happy about people knowing it. I asked her mother within minutes of hearing this and she confirmed that this was the case - we were not blood related - marvelous - A good night was had by all (well us two) - not too much sleep - mm sure you know, etc etc

Repeated question to her mother next day and she denies all knowledge of ever saying such a "ridiculas thing " and wanted to know what I was "talking about" - great night, scared me at the time, no bad came of it, but haven't seen her since.

If I, and she, were single I would find it hard not to get in touch again. I say don't if you are not both single - but best of luck in what ever you decide.

cheers

As you said, it's not illegal and has been said by others it's taboo and normally only practiced west of the Tamar .
So IMHO, noooooooooooooooooo don't go there, its about 0.001% different to your sister .

Great questions and even better answers. This is what car enthusiast sites should be about!

It is definitely a taboo unless you belong to a European royal family, then its compulsory.

I saw a program once about a bloke who fancied his long lost sister and ended up shacking up with her, much to the disgust of the neighbours. Some "expert commentator" at the time believed that it is normal for us to want to shag our close relatives. What stops us is that we've normally spent so much time with them, we dont "fancy" them in the carnal sense, but the bond is still there. If they are long n lost, then sparks are destined to fly.

Sounds like bollocks to me, but it might explain why cousins often hit it off. Never fancied mine much though, but then they are all men. Except for one, but lets not go there......

My grandpa always got on well with his 1st cousin, since ooh, way back. *1

He married some one else and they had my mum and my uncle. *2

My gran died, so after some years he plucked up the courage to ask said cousin out. *3 They married and were happy 'till she died.

He's now after my uncles wife's mum. *4

Some Idea of timescale:
*1 he was 14
*2 he was 20 (err, ..ish)
*3 he was 73
*4 he is 96...

In answer to the topic being the work of a troll - aren't the stuff whot they type supposed to get on other typists' nerves - like saying the new Ultima is a pile of wnak or summat?

Totally genuine topic, yes, I did fancy her and she fancied me.
BTW, I already said I knew it wasn't illegal, just sufficiently 'not the done thing' to not let it go any further
Main reason for posting the question was to find out if anyone else had ever been in the same situation, i.e. fancying someone, being pretty sure that the feeling was reciprocated, but being obliged by convention or other reasons (fear of being filled in by her husband and his mates?) to not do anything about it
A lot of the posts on pistonheads are like this, "this happened to me, anything similar happen to you?"
