Garage recommendations

My 350SE failed the MOT yesterday on rear brakes and handbrake efficiency. Looks as if the discs and pads want replacing. Hoping that it's just a case of adjusting the handbrake.

Can any of you recommend a good garage in the Newport, Cardiff surrounding area that may be able to fit the discs and pads, only it looks to be a bit of a bitch of a job.

Also have got some costs from RT Racing and EBC brakes for the parts.

Can anyone out there give us an approx costing for what this should cost all in? Cheers

Roath garage (Moy road?) or Fforest Garage down near Llanelli. Not sure what the costs are. No numbers to hand but they are in the yellow pages.

Can't recommend a garage, but I'm sure one of the many Welsh Wedgers will be along soon. The rear discs can get a bit neglected. What can also happen is the pads can get stuck in the caliper with all the road crud and brake dust, and the hydraulics can't overcome this resistance. Worth taking the pads out and cleaning them up, which it easy, if necessary filling the outer edges of the backing plate slightly to allow them to sit freely in the caliper (apply Copaslip to the edges, and to the pins). Have a look at the inner and outer faces of the discs and the pad wear - this will give you an idea of whether there is any seizure. Might also be worth inserting something thinner than the pads between the disc and caliper, and having someone press the pedal to check piston movement - but do not allow the pistons to come right out, otherwise its caliper off time! To change discs you need to get the calipers off (handbrake & main) which is a fiddly job, especially as the calipers should be lockwired. Discs are not expensive - Jag. XJ - IIRC c. £60 a pair. I reckon a pro could change both discs in 2 - 3 hrs.

The pads are Mintex and the discs qiunton Hazell
V good value. The discs are £10.17 ea & the pads £10.22 for an axle set(Plus Vat)
