Hi Folks,
I am still debating on whether or not to bother with an exhaust upgrade on my 05 Monaro. I am interested in any feedback in particular for the Borla exhausts (WRC seem to sell them) and another other makes (Wortec or even the ones via Vauxhall). My primary concern is noise, I would love to wake up the v8 noise a little but I drive a mixture of urban and motorway and want it not to droan etc. Please, bear in mind where I live is very urban (so too loud is not a good thing).
Its one of those things, I know I will get a tune done in the next 7-8 weeks along with my rip shifter fitted (plus gearbox oil change at the same time) but should I go mad and buy an exhaust also ?? I am sure Mr Insurance man will love the extra for it also.
Any feedback on brand etc welcome. I have downloaded various exhaust clips and some sound really nice but what are they like to live with ??
Cheers
Steven

The Wortec one is fantastic, no drone and sounds nice, add headers and no cats and you'll swear the world is coming to an end in tunnels/bridges etc!
The borla one is good but reports from the USA suggest that if your going for big power levels (above 360rwhp or approx 450bhp) then it can in itself become a bit of a restriction.

Steven do it! I live other side of the Pennines to you and went down to Kent to get mine done, best trip in a long while. I found with the full monty fitted it does reverberate a little inside in the cruse in 6th. On a long trip if you’re worried about the health and safety aspect for noise exposure limits Peltor do a good range of ear defenders. Guarantee you’ll love it though, just take it easy locally at night.

Talking of interior noise, has anyone else experienced their ears popping when on a long drive. I'm wondering whether or not the cabin pressure is affected in anyway at all. Sounds strange, but I get it a lot when driving the Monaro.
Happens when changing altitude. Try driving in Holland to fix it!!!

Steven,
Try speaking to PCV8 - He's just been to Monkfish with his 05. They've put the full system on for the moment (see his posting from last Monday) but I think he's considering just a cat-back as it gets a bit noisy (he does a colossal mileage so it needs to be comfortable). He's only in Stockport so it might be worth a listen before you decide ?

I am not sure which car you have Swordfish, If you have the standard LS1 5.7 Monaro, maybe consider getting one of the 5.7 HSV VXR coupe exhausts as they might give you what you are looking for. I'm sure the sponsors on here have some lying around!! Whilst not the best result for performance, they are normally better than the stock Monaro exhaust, they are more sensible on the ear.
It is commendable that a lot of your friends on here are willing to let you hear the actual exhausts on their cars, just maybe try and hear it on a similar car to yours. ie not a VXR if you have a Monaro and not a Monaro if you have a VXR!!!! I reckon the diff gearing can have an effect on drone too.
Of course if you have a VXR, then throw everything I have written in the dustbin!!!

I had the Wortec catback fitted to my 05 V8 about a few weeks back. At the moment I have the smaller boxes in the centre section, rather than the straight through pieces.
In my experience it does droan in the cabin at around 1800/1900 rpm. Unfortunately this is somewhere around 70/80mph in 6th gear, meaning it's actually easier on the ears to leave it in 5th at this speed. Having said that, the droaning does seem to have eased a bit over the last couple of weeks, whether that's as the pipes have become a bit sooted up or just because I've got used to it, I don't know.
I don't do too much motorway cruising, so it doesn't really bother me. As the revs climb it makes a great noise, and outside the car it sounds good too. As for the neighbours, well we used to have a Cerbera with sports pipes and that was much louder, so I reckon my neighbours are quite pleased (not that they ever moaned anyway).
If you're concerned I would recommend trying to get a ride in a car with pipes fitted so you can hear for yourself.

Wow, thanks guys.
Yes, its the standard VZ 05 Oddysey Monaro so I will try and contact PCV8, but I had not thought that the VXR exhaust would be that different - interesting as you say some of the tuners may have one lying around. Would also make insurance a little easier.
I did not test drive a VXR either so have no idea what the exhaust noise is like.
Many Thanks
Steven

Hi Paul, Hopefully, we will meet tomorrow night ok.
Caspy, Thanks for letting me know about the VXR exhaust, thats one off the list anyway.
Any opinions on the Vauxhall official upgrade exhaust ?? A kind gent on here has one for sale and maybe another insurance friendly option (assuming I don't fall in love with the Wortec tomorrow night).
Cheers

Steven,
I think that most insurance co's would just charge a small admin fee for fitting a Wortec 'zorst. Admiral charged me about £30 as the increase in bhp was less than 10%.
Cheers,
Neil
You should check before carrying out work because some wont allow it or will charge punative premiums
For Paul / Wortec - just had the centre box removed add the merge pipe put in - BLOODY Hell it is like Armagedon / NASCAR all rolled in to one. I'll give you a bell in a month or two to release a few more (420 would be a nice round figure) ponies.
