Help Wanted with copying cd's to itunes on a Mac
Discussion
Our Acer Laptop has decided to die and it is time to move over completely to the Powerbook we bought last year. As transferring songs on itunes is an absolute nightmare we decided to start again.
So my partner has flattened his Ipod hard disc and is now copying his entire CD library onto the Powerbook G4 which is equipped with a Superdrive.
I have to say it is not going well at all, hence our request for help. The copying process is no where near as quick as on a pc laptop (In a day he has only managed to copy 36 hours music)and frequently the machine is struggling to copy and freezes. For example he can e copying a 16 track album, all appears to be going well when it suddenly sticks. This is not a one off affair it is repeatedly happening.
Can anyone point us in the right direction of a possible problem or is this normal.

The only thing I've found with importing CDs to an iMac G5 was that it seems incredibly sensitive to fingerprints / smudges / nutella etc. on the CD. For albums that will play perfectly well in the house, in the car, and on my PC, the iMac often seems to struggle until I give them a good clean.
Not sure if it's the same superdrive as in the Powerbook or not, though - ours shows as a Matshita DVD-R UJ-825, revision DBN7.

Sounds ominous Catherine.
One thing to check, assuming you're using iTunes to do the ripping, there's a option: Preferences->Advanced->Importing "Use error correction when importing CDs". This option slows down the process considerably if you have dirty or scuffed discs.
Out of interest, when a CD is copying, what speed does iTunes say it's performing the copy at? It will say something like X5 or x10 etc. in the little window at the top.
From my own experience (I've ripped all of my 1200+ CD collection twice - long story) I found iTunes to be the fastest software for doing it on the Mac.
One other thing - what format are the CDs being ripped to? On the same option page you can select the encoder. From memory I seem to remember AAC files took longer to compress than "ordinary" MP3 files. As the ripping and compressing is done on-the-fly, this would then slow down the whole process.
Edited to say : just properly read the title which quite clearly mentions iTunes. I should stop posting before breakfast.....
Apart from that, if it's really that slow it may well be your CD drive that has problems.
