My insurance is due for renewal and I am being increasingly frustrated by the requests from insurers for the Thatcham Cat 1 approval certificate for the Monaro security system. Apparently the Monaro does not have an 'approved' system despite Vauxhall fitted them as standard to the rest of the VXR range and almost all other model types.

www.thatcham.org/security/pdfs/compliance.pdf

1)Can anyone recommend an insurer that is happy with the standard system.
2)Can we all get together and sign an open letter to Vauxhall requesting they a)Have the standard system approved OR
b)Fit a UK recognised system as standard

Be aware all that have had this question asked and stated that they 'thought it was approved'. Your insurance can be voided if the underwriters determine the system is not approved.

Sainsburys dont require anything.... And they're quite cheap as well, even with upgrades

Not sure the Monaro system is actually Vauxhall's as the car is not actually their model.

I was with elephant last year and they asked the same question at renewal time. Also their renewal premium was £900 whilst the RAC who I wanted to go with was £450. You could say I'm saving enough to get a Cat 1 alarm system fitted....but why should i have to.

I completely agree. My company insured me and then sent a letter saying I need to upgrade - but since the alarm does all I need it to I shall be seeing if I can wing it until renewal.. (it's not long, I upgraded from my previous car).

Cobra 3836 overlay thatcham cat1 upgrade around £250 at most places fitted. Works with existing alarm and uses your key fob to arm/disarm. Also adds ultrasonics to cabin

Is Cobra 3836 the right ref. i could not find it on the Cobra web site. I did find 3868 which upgrades to Cat 2-1. Insurance company wants Cat 1. I have sent a letter to VX HQ and the Slaters in Colwyn Bay (Dealer) and am awaiting their offer to fit me one free. Well you gotta try it with them eh?

Cat 2-1 upgrads a existing cat 2 system to Cat 1 so that will be good enough for the insurance

Not sure that will be good enough as there is no Thatcham certification on the Monaro system. I'm still awaiting a formal response from vauxhall.
