Just let fiancee drive Chim home!!

What a nice day!! We took the Chim out for a blast in the great sunshine today. after we had lunch in droitwich, my fiancee drove home to gloucester. She is now getting use to it, especially the non PAS!!, but finds changing down to 2nd hard. She didn't go much above 70 on the M5, and I did sigh as I seen Mondeos, Skodas etc overtaking us (what a cheeky sod), my fiancee just told me reading this!!! Her excuse is that it's just too easy to go way too fast if she put her foot down!
But, all in all, a perfect TVR day, ( apart from seeing a Mondeo dying to overtake because Chan refused to speed up!!!)
One thing, when I get to about 5000 revs, the engine stutters sometimes and I seem to have no more power above that, does anyone know what could be the cause? I know it's not the petrol as I have used Shell optimax always. I always feel I have to change gear too early! is this common? what is the rev limit, or does it fluctuate between Chims??

The rev limiter should kick in between 5700 and 6000 revs so it's not that. It might be that the engine is running too cool and too lean at this time of year -- time for a re-tune? Others, more expert than I, will doubtless be along shortly to provide more precision than I can muster.
Manek, yes, I was thinking of a re-tune, but, as you said, it may be the cold, as the temp gauge is very low when moving along. having said that, isnt that the reason people fit turbos, to have the engine running cooler?, or am I showing my massive ignorance on that subject!! I don't suppose I could get it looked at under my warranty could I??

I start my car up every other day and let it tick over for about 15 mins when I'm not using it. I have to admit though that I still cross my fingers when I turn the key, especially in this weather, I do hope it's fixed and running soon mate

I reckon it is your rev limiter. Mine cuts in at what the counter reckons is a shade above 5k revs, but the rev counter is not the most scientific instrument in the world.
If it is, you will feel like you have hit a brick wall (and will worry quite a lot!) and the car will stutter very quickly.
I did this a lot when I first got it as I'm used to high-revving Italian machinery, but once you get used to it, you make better progress by changing sooner.

I too thought it may be the limiter, as I was use to driving the vvc MGTF to over 7000 rpm until banging on the limiter. But,, in my Chim, it's only sometimes, as i have seen the rev counter go to 6000 rpm, I can still accelerate, but it seems all the power has gone once past the 5000, and not a hint of the brick wall limiter kicking in! I have to admit that I know very little about engines, but I just sense that I am not getting the full quota of top end power!
If I rang the dealers who sold it to me, do you think they would look at for me, as the last thing I want to do is throw money at it when there may be nothing wrong!!

Sounds more like an intermittent electrical problem to me - is the fault particularly noticeable went the engine is hot (i.e after sitting in traffic or during 'brisk' use? Or is it there at all temperatures (not that you would be going to 5000rpm in a cold engine ). I suppose my water's telling me that this might be an insulation breakdown in the HT circuit under load, perhaps exacerbated by temperature? If so, should be easily diagnoseable. Definitely something you should discuss with the dealer you bought it from.

Thamks hut, i shall ring up the dealer tomorrow, and see if they can look at it under the TVR warranty. I wouldn't know if it does it when cold, as I do leave the engine running for about 5-10 mins before I even move off, and it ticks away just fine and has thus far never cut out on idle. I have not noticed any perticular stage of driving when I get the stuttering, but I also admit that I do not take it up past 5000 revs too often. when I do, I notice a drop off in power, even though it can still rev past the 5000. In my TVR 'manual', it states that the maximum bhp is generated at 5500 revs, and has a maximum rpm of 6250 for my 450.At 5000 rpm, it seems, only sometimes, that the rev range is spent, and I have to change up, and it pulls like hell again!! As I said, i just feel like I am not tapping into the full potential of the engine as yet. I know it sounds pretty ambiguous, but I just sense that something's not quite right!

My wife regularly drives the chimp around, up thru the gears rain or shine without pas and no problem parking it either, probably a good a driver as me, she's even had it sideways overtaking in the wet no probs, MG160 not very exciting is it yawn, she's had 180+ bhp since she was 19, Proper girl racer.
