Porsche aero-kits the Boxster

Porsche is now offering a new SportDesign package for the Boxster and Boxster S roadster models. This optional extra consists of a spoiler for the standard front trim, an automatically extending, redesigned rear spoiler, and a modified rear trim with an integrated diffuser.

The new SportDesign package is designed to improve aerodynamics, reducing lift front and rear without increasing drag, it says here.

The rear trim, integrated diffuser and extending wing are aimed at evoking the Carrera GT car. The components are painted in the vehicle’s exterior colour.

We only have price for Germany so far but we believe that Porsche is offering the package worldwide. In Germany, it costs €4,060 on purchase of a new vehicle or, as a retrofit item, €3,422 plus fitting.

Prices include VAT.

£3K for some plastic mouldings, thats nearly a tenth of the price of the whole car. I like Porkers but sometimes Porsche take the michael over the options. I'm sure you're really gonna notice the difference at UK road speeds, this kit surely is just for posers who have more money than brain cells. IMHO of course.

I agree it's alot of money for a extra that you will never get the true advantage from.. unles you have test track in your back yard.
The rear wing for the 911 GT3 RSR race car only cost £2,000.00 and that does a proper job.

arent we all missing the point a bit here? it looks pretty to some and adds choice to others. from a sales point of view thats good.

it probably doesnt mean the death of the marque or that weve all become chavs (luckily, im already a chav anyway).

Well, thats true, but they simply couldn't resist another opportunity to increase the average sale price from the RRP of the base model.

It's hardly an improvement on the standard car. However the rear "Cayman Style" spoiler is something I would be interested in.

Does anybody know if you can have this retrofitted?

How come its cheaper to retro-fit than to order from new?? Unless the fitting is expensive why would you order it with your car. Simply wait until it's delivered and book it in to be fitted!

However, who pays for the aerodynamic research? The blurb says it's an aerodynamic package, not just a styling kit.

Then again if it's addressing aero issues, surely they should have it got it right first time and/or be standard?

fitting plus painting will make it more expensive than as option from the factory.

The Boxster is, I think, cd. 0.29 so no aero issues here. The standard Boxster rear spoiler creates, again I think, 150kg of downforce when it pops up. I'd sacrifice a little downforce for the look of the Cayman spoiler and a little more at the top end.

Then again, maybe the Cayman spoiler creates the same or more downforce than the Boxster spoiler?

Or just maybe, if Porsche is concerned with aero performance, the two rear spoilers are different because the shapes of the cars are different.

certainly not as hideous as the 986 aerokits but doesn't add anything IMHO - spend the money on a PSE and some nice 19s instead
