can anyone recommend a brake kit upgrade for the E46 M3 and is there an ecu download worth checking out ?

ask at bm3w.co.uk. You can upgrade the brakes to APs for a chink of cash or just do the pads and hoses. There is no worthwhile ECU upgrade. The engine is already producing 106 bhp/litre. It took an expensively engineered new air intake system to get another 17bhp out of it for the CSL.

And cams, exhaust valves, ecu, air metering system and manifold!

AP 6 pot front kit is the way to go, don't bother with the rears for anything other than looks.

what sort of cost for the ap's and are they much improved on the standard m3 system ?

About £1500+vat from memory, I fitted mine myself so can't help you out on fitting costs, took 1/2 a day and was very easy.

I also put braided hoses on the rear, changed the fluid and pagid RS29 front, RS19 pads rear, the stopping power is more impressive but to be honest the complete lack of fade is the best part. The pedal feel is improved and as DoctorD says, they feel like they should've been on the car from day 1, best money I've spent in a long time.
