Porsche DSG: so when's it due?

Dual clutch gearboxes: They keep saying they invented the things and that they are about to offer it as an option but after at least 18 months since I first heard about it there's no sign of it on the horizon.

The question is when are they likely to offer it and in which of the range of boxster/cayman/911 are they likely to offer it?
Does anyone know?

I heard a guess of early to mid 2007 from AFN Chiswick.

Autocar last week claimed that the 997 replacement would have the DSG option but that isn't due until 2010!

I can't understand the delay. Audi had one in the TT back in 2003 and it is the best gearbox money can buy IMO. Certainly beats that awful system in the F-cars.

Also interesting that when money was no object with the Veyron then DSG was the choice.

Surely that can only have been said in the context of it being a standard fit item for the next 911?

As for the rest surely the above mention of 2007 seems about right. Even so 4-5 years after the Audi one! why didn't they just commission the guys who did the audi and Veyron boxes to do one for them?

I'm mainly asking to see if I should wait until its launched before I look at ordering the Cayman.

Ahhh,..... you bunch of nonces!!!!!! It's a sports car....it should only have a manual gearbox!!!!!!!!!!!

Er yes, in some ways I totally agree manual=sportscar=manual, but the benefits of perfect down blips and quicker gearchanges than I can attain just sounds that bit more appealing. Want to make my mind up by driving one though, hopefully before I draw my pension.

Have you ever tried a DSG? This is no ordinary semi-automatic box believe me.

I had it for two years in my previous 3.2 Audi TT v6 coupe and now i have the manual 6 speed in the Cayman and it feels cumbersome. I REALLY miss the DSG for the throttle blips on downshifts and sheer enjoyment of using the paddles to upshift more quickly. This is especially useful at traffic lights.

Admittedly I have not tried it - just a thing for me to have a manual. Maybe I need to be more "open! to change!!! However I am fairly competant at doing the blips myself and that always gives me a thrill.... can't imagine being so deighted with a chip doing it for me Also grown out of traffic light drag racing

It's all a bit "playstation" though don't you think.

I heard the tiptronic 997TT is quicker than the manual, so by my reckoning we won't see a DSG box until it's quicker still.

Now that...is bloody going some.

Wash your mouth out. Since the Challenge Stradale, Ferrari's F1 gearbox is definitely on the money - only problem is the paddles don't move with the steering wheel. With two clutches you're only adding weight for a bit of smoothness - might as well have a slush box.

OK - point taken on the newer Ferrari boxes, have to admit i haven't tried it since the early 360 which i thought was really disappointing. I heard the CS and F430 are much better so perhaps it's time for a test drive

The weight issue is an interesting point. DSG added 70 kilos to the weight to the Audi so maybe that is the main reason why Porsche aren't planning one yet.

I had no idea the DSG added 70Kg to the car. Quite a bit really, could really make some difference on the cornering.

agree with Garyhun. Saw on another post that you had a red S on the badge, was that real?
two questions, how did you manage to get a new Cayman so quickly after the last one (and did you suffer on depreciation in such a short time)and second how did you get them to put a red S on it?

Yes, the red 'S' is real but one i procured myself from a shop in the US. Simply removed the original with some dental floss (as they are only stuck with adhesive) and stuck my red one on! Just a little bit more individual i think.

Story of the 2 Caymans is that i took an original launch car in December and it was great but i didn't have PCM or sports seats and as nice as the Basalt Black is, i wanted a silver one (boring, i know!). So i called my local OPC and asked them how long to get another one. Surprisingly they said 3 months if i placed my 10% deposit that day. I did and it actually took only 8 weeks from the day i specd it.

Now the sore bit! Initially, the OPC offered me 6k less than i paid for the Black one so you can guess my response . I think they got the message but the best i could do was take a 4k hit, but hey, it was my choice to change!

Don't believe the stories of 9 months plus waiting list. If you call around the OPCs you can spec your own like i did and have it in a few weeks.

Ouch on the hit there!
I am going to order one of those beauties this year all going well in my new venture. I've yet to drive one though as I don't like wasting peoples time. especially as I want to test ones with and without PASM. It was also the main reason for this post. If the DSG is turning up in the next 9-12 months I'd have to wait again to try one of them as well before ordering.

Well I suspect there are a cpl of reasons.

1. Weight. Porsche AIUI are looking to keep theirs lightweight.
2. The PDK saga/farce. Porsche dont want a repeat of it. They got away with it in ...er, bugger, 82/3?...because the 956 was so far ahead of the opposition they could have fielded the things with a 2 speed Yank Tank auto and it would still win. Now, this is a road car and very very high profile in a crowded market. It needs to be perfect.

My dealer also told me it was initially going to be an option on the TT, but they ditched that idea until they could lose some weight off it.
