I have an external 40GB usb drive and I need to copy it contents to the internal c drive (a folder called external40).

What is the command i should enter in the DOS type window to do this?

I don't want to use the windows copy command as it'll time out due to the number of file.

(its an XP machine)

this should work...
xcopy /e d: c:external40

edit: with some backslashes in the right place

edit again: russ_e's switch list looks more complete than mine

***will that recurse ? I'm not sure so ... ***

I remember that xcopys advantage over copy is the ability to recurse (copy sub folders)

xcopy c: d: /s /e

c: this is the source
d: this is the destination

/s this copy subdirectories
/e this copies empty sub directories (folders without any files in )

***Alternatively **

go to your source then switch to destination and cd nutil you find the start and finish
folders.

lets say you want to copy everything in c:holiday-photos to d: ackupmarch2006

1.) c: (selects c: drive)
2.) cd holiday-photos
....so now c: is in the correct dir
3.) d:
4.) cd ackupmarch2006

xcopy C: D: /s /e

by not including the path we are asking dos to copy where c: drive is to where d: is.

wow - this brought back memories !

xcopy /e d: c:external40 did recurse properly as far as i can tell. just comparing the drive that about to be scrubbed against the folder that everything went into on the other drive.

My first 'pc' was the VIC 20 in 1983 !

Parents bought it for me and then we had to go to a dinner engagement !
When we came back i was told to go to bed !
(so had to wait till the next day to use it ).

Collected the 'Input' series of magazines by Marshall Cavendish and learnt to program.

8 bit computing - remember the trials we use to have with them :-)
