Hi guys,

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of the following new noise my Chim 500 has started to make.

When starting from cold, I have recently starting getting a whirring sound when the car is in gear and the accelerator is pressed down (even only slightly).

The sound only happens between 1,000 and 2,000 revs (and doesn't increase or decrease with the revs change), and stops after 5/6 miles of driving (but does continue even though the car has warmed up by this time). I have also noticed that the noise tends to go away if I have to stop (ie at the petrol station) and restart.

I'm guessing (and hoping) it's nothing serious, but havent got a clue, so any suggestions anyone?

The car is back to the garage for a little paintwork on a scuff next week, so I'd like to give them a few pointers as to what this new mystery noise is?

Thanks in advance.

Matt,

the noise is defo comming from the engine end of the car, and only when the accelerator is pushed down, even just a little...does that help...?

Sorry, can't be any more precise than that....

does it stop when you put you foot on the clutch, if it does it could just be a noisy thrust bearing seizing up a bit over winter if it doesn't sorry i cant help without hearing it

I take it that the clutch is engaged when the revs are raised ? if not it's the wheels spining
Could be the release bearing , does the noise occur while not in gear ?

Check the alternator .. could well be a bearing on the way out.

Yes OnlyMe, it does usually stop when you put you foot on the clutch or take it off the accelerator (although it may continue for a few seconds, as when its cold my car tends to rev itself when you depress the clutch, almost like you've pulled the choke full out on an old car).
But as I said, only between 1K nd 2K revs...

Its defo not the wheels spinning, and generally the noise doesnt occur when not in gear, but always when in gear and foot pushing the gas.

What you doing with your left foot when depressing gas pedal? See if it makes a difference when pushing clutch pedal down. If it goes away then it's the release bearing (or clutch plate!).

Did you look to see if the wheels weren't spinning?

Dodger, Hi Roger, I take it you're working late in Whitley again. PS Happy New Year.

Dodger, the whirring noise does tend to go away when the clutch is depressed, but that said, it also tends to go away if you have to stop and restart (petrol station etc). So, its I'd guess it's not too likely to be a clutch problem (I hope anyway).

This release bearing.....are we talking a clutch release bearing? I only ask as I know nothing about engines, clutches, cars etc...

release bearing thrust bearing same thing and pretty bullet proof even if making a noise, they generally dry up a bit and until warm can make the odd whizzing noise wouldn't be too worried unless it gets worse get it done next clutch!

I'm with soddy, in that it could be a alternator or even the belt, the clutch pedal being depressed stopping it can be misleading, as the revs will change at same time which could be enough to reduce noise.

Sounds like poly-V belt fouling/worn to me; wouldn't describe knacked release bearing as 'whirring'. The belts are just so long and serpentine...good luck with locating it though - annoying.
