I am looking for your advice!

I need to buy a 2nd car as a daily driver next to my GT3. It needs to be reasonably comfortable, quick enough to overtake, carry a dog and some luggage when needed and able to handle winters with snow. Budget is about 10,000 GBP (or 15,000 USD).

I've had an Audi S3, Golf GTI and a BMW 3-series before. I want something more interesting this time. I was thinking maybe a 968 from early 90's.

There are many 968 around now for under £10K but you have to ensure that the major jobs have been carried out (Belts, Cam chain and Cams, Plate Lift, Clutch, Gearbox etc etc) because if they havent you could be left with a big bill.

Subaru Forester XT (ie the Turbo one)? You can get a 40/50k mileage example from a specialist for around £10k now with a bit of bartering.
Shares a lot of its mechanicals with the Subaru Impreza Turbo, so its fairly quick (& can be made quicker very easily) & reliable. Also handles well, for the sort of car it is.

in your budget, really the Coupe is the only option. a good Sport will still command over 10k and a CS? - forget it, added to which there is nowhere to put the dog in a CS (or much else). As a daily drive you want creature comforts so standard coupe it is. since you have a GT3 you have all the perfomance you need, so why not go for a 968tip - there are plenty about, they are somewhat unloved (compared to the manuals) and you will certainly be able to find a nice one well within the 10k budget. Wont light your fire under hard acceleration but will happily cruise at high speed and is as bombproof re build as the 944.. With a tip you will have plenty of cash left over for a good belts service and variocam check...

I used to use my CS as an everyday car but the manual boot release is a pain. The Sport and Coupe are probably best. Tiptronics are certainly good if you do a lot of stop start traffic because the clutch can be hard work and start to judder in traffic.

I wouldn't recommend a 968 as an everyday car; too highly strung to be truly cheap to run and not properly practical compared to wagon style stuff.

- BMW 330i Touring
- BMW 540i Touring
- Impreza WRX Wagon (5 door)
- Alpine B8 Estate
- Mercedes W202 C43 Touring
- Audi S4 Avant

All available between 8k-15k.

My pick would be a W202 C43 V8 estate... beautifully built and not that sought after so prices are pretty low.

In 5 years' time I'm going to get me a new shape M5 Touring!

You clealy need an Alfa 156 Sportwagon. The 2.0TS isn't particularly quick compared with some other things, but great fun to drive and loves to be revved. And looks much nicer than a Subaru. Or you might prefer a 2.5V6, although they apparently drink a bit.
