Alfa Romeo Sportwagon

Another fantastic 5 door coupe!!! Much better looking than the saloon!
(As is the case with the 156, but obviously I'm a bit biased).
I'm chuffed they have kept the sloping roofline and tapering side windows so it looks so much more sleek and elegant than some practical estate thing - or worse done like Honda and copied the 156 Sportwagon side windows, but retained a flat roof line!

Ok, hope not to sture up a hornets nest hear but!
I have been looking into getting a 156 sportwagon for the practicality and fun together. However i have been looking around for some time and have come across so many cars that have had faults, engine trouble etc etc. I now fear that i could be asking for trouble by speanding my hard sort after 5K on an alfa rather than a audi or vw.

I am sure you are absolutely correct.

Just depends what floats your boat. Walking out in the morning and saying "Phwoar, what a stunning looking car" or "Woweee, somebody extinguish my trousers, just look at my super damped grab handles".

And don't forget German cars breakdown too, so then you end up with a dull, ugly and unreliable car.
:tut:

My alfa's have been far more reliable than my VW's.....and even audi. They are on a par with the bmw's (so far I haven't had an alfa or bmw that has stranded me, the others have)
My old 164 had 264,000 miles on it, same engine, same box infact the same everything, even clutch from new. The only thing that it had was main dealer servicing every six months regardless.....Alfa's can be good as well as bad.
I still have an alfa at home, wifeys 145 cloverleaf.....and....176,000 miles, no troubles.

Maybe i get the boring and reliable
BUT!! How do you know any £5,000 car will be reliable? I would go for the sexy, look after it, find a good independant specialist nearby and have a wail of a time. If you can afford the petrol, the V6 is a very strong engine, and if you can find one, so is the 2.4 JTD. The Twin Sparks are wonderful engines but they are not quite as sturdy and need a bit more TLC. Other than crappy pasta suspension bushes, you won't find any other problems that you wouldn't get on a German domestic appliance.
