Cutting Out at Low Revs
Discussion
Would have done a search on this, but the facility is down right now...
The car has started to cut out on me, it's done it three or four times in the past (up to six months ago), but I put that down to others things at the car as twice it happened when warming up the car.
But the problem came back with a vengence earlier this week, while the car was stationary and warm (stopped to take a call) after five or so minutes the revs wavered before it cut out, during the same trip it occured two or three more times when approaching roundabouts and traffic lights, whenever the rpm drops to the lower reaches, but still under a small amount of throttle - giving a little extra loud pedal rescued it a few time when it occured.
Yesterday (150 miles done) it got far worse happening at least a dozen times, when dropping the revs driving up motorway slip roads coming off the M25 in the evil rain was a fun one!
The car restarts fine; although the revs need to be held for the first few seconds to ensure it doesn't stall again, it was also fine when stationary while I opened the garage last night.
There is also a potent smell of petrol around the car now - I don't know if this is due to unburnt fuel getting through to the exhaust system when the stalls occur especially as a few of them have occured while doing over 30mph... Or is leaking fuel the cause of the problem?
Otherwise the car is running fine and pulling as it should, so it doesn't feel like a major mechanical issue, perhaps some kind of sensor has gone a bit sparko

That makes me think... I did see a a cloud of smoke out of the back end when I gave it some welly earlier in the day and I remember when Norman's (not on PH) throttle pots went they chucked out more smoke than a smoky thing! And at the same time you could smell the petrol fumes a mile off...

If you've got clouds of unburnt fuel out the back under load then it could potentially be a duff lambda sensor.
But I must say, the Lambda sensor was one of my candidates, doesn't that control the fuel/air mixture, and hence in this case over or under-fueling at different stages?
