buying a cerbera

the wife and i want to buy a cerbera an have about 20k to spend, we dont know much about them but a dealer in warwick said the 4.5 was more reliable than the 4.2 is this true? can anyone give us some buying advice.....pleeeease.

The dealer in Warwick is probably Kings....

Not sure about the 4.2/4.5 reliability differences - it is possible that they were trying to move the more expensive 4.5's.

Later cars have just about the same engines anyway (I am sure I heard somewhere just the induction is different (or something).

Earlier 4.2's like mine are probably the least reliable (although not now, since they get sorted), but the engines in Cerbera's really aren't the weak point. The ancillaries tend to be the bits that go.

Have a search around the forums.....Lots of threads about this sort of thing.

Post 98 cars tended to be more reliable, I don't think there is any difference between 4.2 or 4.5 for that matter, but I'm no expert! Providing its been ran in correctly and properly maintained the engines should last. As steve points out it tends to be ancillaries that go. 20k would probably buy you 96-97 4.2 at dealer, or 97-98 4.2 or 98 4.5 privately. Make sure you budget on at least (I'm being pessimistic) £3k running costs per annum thru main dealer. Go on general condition, loads of bills/receipts. Although earlier 4.2s tended to have a worse reputation by now most of them are sorted cars and do IMO represent v good value
