recent insurance quotes for modified cars, anyone?

Phoning round the usual insurers, they all seem to be shying away from modified cars. I've had no trouble in previous years, but now most places seem to have doubled or even trippled their quotes compared to last year. Some well known names are declining to quote at all. What's going on, are they trying to recoup losses from flooding/911 or something? That stuff is nothing to do with me, I just want to drive my car!

I recently asked my insurer (Tesco) to quote for swapping the engine in my S4. They appeared to have no problem in quoting for the upgrade, and advised that the increased premium was based on a simple formula comparing increased hp against original. (I haven't yet gone down the road of pointing out that they originally quoted the same premium for a V8S and an S4 )

yes, its very annoying even for mild mods (sports exhaust, after market air filter, boost gauge, BOV, etc)... have to explain to someone who sounds like they dont know what a car is what each mod is, then 30 minutes later get told "sorry we cant insure that car" dunno how these guys driving around with 800bhp skylines get insurance!

mannings want 25% extra premium and 100% extra excess if i chip my Griff (mark adams) - seems a bit off!
i told the guy that if after ALL my mods i get any where near the 340 CLAIMED brake (that i'm already paying for!)i'd EAT the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
didn't change his mind tho

Funny you should mention that because There are quite a few people in an area Nearish to me who live in £25k terrace houses in a crap area, who have cars ranging from skylines, M5's, Lexsus, Mercs etc, most of which cost more than their houses. I wounder if they do have insurance?!
oh and there all modified with 'phat' exhausts and all the bolt on pieces, 'cruzing' around the city centre.
