Just had a trouble free week, except for the pinking. Left the car for a week and it fired up then died, fires every time but won't run. History that I think is a different problem but may be relevent or symptomatic of something that just got worse. I adjusted the throttle potentiometer from 105 to the recommended 325 this made the car run better but the tick over would not adjust to less than 1000rpm. High oxygen reading on the MOT but I cannot find any leaks on the inlet, tried disconnecting and blocking all bits and pieces rpm did not change as I reconnected, until the oil breather then it rose. All this was prior to the good week. Sure you guy's have described this problem before but cannot find it. Help wifey wants the hair dresser special next week and please I want Trevor back!

This really sounds like fuel - like you have fuel in the rail (starts) but pump does not turn on .. no fuel pressure..

I'd be with Rev on this one. So wip off the AFM inlet pipe and with ignition on push the flap to see if the pump is running. Failing that your injectors may not be firing and your initial start up is due to the cold start injector priming the plenum on its own. Better Peeps will be along shortly with more help - good luck.

Spot on I disconnected the cold start injector and no start at all, reconnected and instant start plus instant death. So the injectors aren't working. Back to the garage to try to find out why, but where to look?

The signal wire between the dizzy and the ECU is worth a check.

Done that got continuity back to pin 1 on the ecu plug. I follow your logic, it should be something in common with all the injectors. ALso checked, the pump does run when I open the air valve with my pinky.

Well, it's a tenuous one, but what about fiddling with the wires behind the ecu as I have just done.

Mine (ex dicky's) had the same problem, it's running marvellously now.....

You need 12 volt to the resistor pack via the ECU via the "main relay" it's the Bosche one. If you've got 12V at resistor pack check for 3V out of the resistors to each injector. If still can't find it......................wait for Wedg1e and crew

?fuel pump, try hard wiring it, by putting a wire from the 12v starter directly to the pump....if your pump is kippered then as soon as you remove the wire it will stop.

Make absolutely sure the ECU connector is latching into the ECU properly (that daft spring clip).
If, with the ignition on, you flick the throttle wide open, do you get a 'click' from all the injectors?
You might just have a dodgy ECU, anyone local to you who can do a quick swap to check?

Do you have 12v *to* the injectors? If the answer is 'yes' then check that the -ve side of the injector is connected to the ECU, and the ECU itself is earthed. If it is all OK then you ae looking for something that would stop the ECU from even trying to fire the injectors. Is the ECU itself actually powered up?

Doh! Sorry, I didn't realise it was you! Of course I have a spare (or three), when would you like it?

Hi Ian, Sent you an e-mail please give me a ring. We can keep the thread going when we have tried a different ecu. Regards,
Ron

The man is too modest. Cannot disagree with the timings . My ecu seemed to prefere connection via Ians magic diagnostic box. Immediately started to run, well at least on one bank of cylinders. A few switch flicks on the magic box proved the other 4 injectors were healthy, then they decided to work too. Bit more fiddling revieled a bad connection (mucky, sods law I had already checked them and they were o.k)on the resistor pack. Then what was the problem. A few well aimed Wedg1e punches on the ecu and it died, a few more punches and its up and running again. So we decided to try one of 'merlins' spare ecu's although the meastro had warned me that they should be factory matched with the air flow meter, sod must have realised it was Sunday and gone to church, Ian's ecu had the engine sounding better than it ever has. A week of to really prove it, then its into mine with the soldering iron but I think there will be some horse trading to be done for the one thats installed now.
Thanks again Ian.
