Hi folks,

I have been placing ads on PH for about 3 yrs now. I collect Porsches (older ones usually) and I then sell them to get another etc. I placed my Boxster on earlier this week ( I tried to anyway) and I got the following through from Ted.

" It would appear that the advert you have placed is not for a private transaction, but a commercial sale.

If you would like your advert published, please reply to this email with your invoicing address and we will convert your advert to a trade advert.

You've triggered alerts to us based on the number of adverts submitted.
For a private seller, you're selling a lot of cars. I know in the past
you've said these are for friends. Unfortunately that's what every trader
tells us when we challenge them.
If these genuinely are for friends then please get them to submit the
adverts.
Otherwise I'm afraid given the volume of cars you are selling I believe we
are justified in assessing this as 'trading' and will require you to submit
future adverts as 'trade'.

I'm sorry if this seems cynical, but every trader we challenge tells us exactly the same thing.
We provide a free service at our discretion. You've made good use of that and that's fine, but if you wish to continue to advertise then we'd rather you did so as a trader.
Regards,
Ted "

HAVE ANY OF THE REST OF YOU GOT SUCH REPIES BEFORE? I'M NOT A TRADER, MIGHT LIKE TO BE BUT REALLY NOT TOO GOOD AT THE BUYING/SELLING THING.

I have refuted Ted's accusation, but, as you can see from the last paragraph, he seems to have made his mind up. I'm now being denied the right to place ads like any other member of the public. I'm being discriminated against.

IF ANY OF YOU HAVE RECEIVED ANYTHING LIKE THE ABOVE, please let me know.

Thanks

ATG

Rights? Discrimination? Don't devalue those words. Try looking at it like this: someone has been doing you a favour, but they now think you're taking advantage of them so they've withdrawn that favour.

You're not being denied use of the classifieds. I'm simply saying that from now on I'll only accept them as trade ads.

If you've found the service useful to sell all those cars then I'm sure £12+VAT isn't too much of a hardship and won't eat into the proceeds of each sale too much.

I'm sorry if you are a genuine user of the PH classifieds - exactly how many cars have you advertised through PH?

ATG - thanks for the only reasonable reply.

You're probably right - PH has been doing me a favour and now withdrawn that priviledge. However, withdrawing that priviledge infers that I'm a trader (which I'm not)

I took early retirement (age 43) from a well paid job in banking due to ill health 3 yrs ago. I bought my first Porsche then (a 944 S2) and got smitten. I have had around 15 since then and I have 6 at the moment. This is a hobby. I work part-time at the Bank now. Those are the details. Obviously it's difficult to convince people but there you are.

Thanks

C'mon - you must seriously see the other side of the coin? 10 sales in 3 months - it does say "trader"... not only that raising the matter in the site's forum is just a tad underhand, is it not?

Bear in mind that this site is not a hobby, it's the man's business. If he beleives that you're a trader, then he has every right to ask a nominal fee to advertise... hey, if it really upsets you that much why not advertise elsewhere... I'm sure you'll find that £12+VAT is cheap...

EDITED due to speeeeling mystakes.

I'm obviously not going to convince you guys am I?

I don't use the PH forum usually.

Yes, I have had ten cars on site this year so far - I own 6 Porsches at moment and I sold an X1/9 recently via PH. It's a hobby - no money made. I'm semi retired through ill health at 43, so I like to indulge my passion for the marque.

The tax-man? Why would he be involved? I have worked on behalf of the Inland Revenue and conducted investigations myself as part of my full-time job in retail banking when I was working, so I do have some knowledge of this area.

Any way, if any of you are interested in viewing any of the cars in my collection, email me.

I'm going over to UK mainland at 25th April on the 911/Porsche World sponsored Spring Cruise in aid of MacMillan Cancer. Look it up and think about joining the cruise from Brooklands to Haynes Motor museum. All in a good cause.

If you were to look into how many were sold you'll actually see that I only sold two cars through PH - a Fiat X1/9 and a Torqoise 944 S2.

Your point being?

If you're prepared to 'lose' money on all these cars, then an extra £12+VAT seems a drop in the ocean

Had a chap last week advertising a 996 Turbo. A PHer pointed out that it was also advertised on Autotrader as a trade sale.

Corresponded with the chap who insisted that it was on Sale or Return at the dealership (like the cars he advertised last year ).

Strange though that when I rang the dealership it turned out that he worked there. He was 'with a customer' when I tried to speak to him

Yes there are people like that. I've come across them too. They're not what they seem or what they say they are.

I'm amazed that since you are so passionate about the marque, and have found PH such a valuable resource for indulging your hobby, you haven't shown up on the Porsche forum to discuss your cars with like-minded individuals.

IMO, you're missing out on the best bit of PH - the people.

You're so right, the people do make it. Hence 4 of us going to the Spring Cruise in south of England on 25 April, two trips to Knockhill in Scotland last year, a New Years Day run along the North Antrim Coast with 7 Porsches and 4 BMW's and so on. We in Northern Ireland are prepared to travel, but I often find that people on mainland UK, especially in England, are reluctant to travel. Last year we had over 50 people to my friends house from Scotland for a Porsche get together and 40 cars. This year we will reciprocate that and are due to go over in August.

But jealous guys like I've just come across since opening this topic don't make PH. You can't take it that a guy privately owns 6 Porsches, a Beetle, 2 Citroens, an M3 and a Merc.

I've just spent a day with a guy and his family on the Welsh border. He's a BMW petrolhead and as such owns 4 cars - an M3 (the first type), a 740, an 840Ci Sport and a humble 525i Touring. So yes, it's the people that can make a forum or any such hobby interesting.

I hope that you're deliberately trying to wind us up with this comment! If you really think that way then you're a sad character - the previous posters' replies to you didn't even hint at jealousy. Get a grip.

Not Rude Girl or ATG, they have both been broadminded and constructive with their comments. The others I think have a chip on their shoulder and are narrowminded. They can't seem to understand the fact that a guy can have several cars of his own and simply deny what is fact.

Whereas Rude Girl and ATG actually took the trouble to reply by taking up the positive side of things. I'm not sure where you stand on this though.
