David James has concluded a deal to buy the TVR brand from Nikolia Smolenksi today and the new TVR will be based on the Smart Roadster.
DaimlerChrysler AG's unit Smart said it has signed a memorandum of understanding to sell the licensing rights for its Roadster and Roadster-Coupe, plus some of the plants that manufacture the models, to a UK-based consortium, Project Kimber.
The agreement -- covering the redesign, production and marketing of the brand -- is to be finalised 'in the next few months'.
Smart intends to sell those production facilities that are 'no longer needed', it added, without specifying further.
No financial details were disclosed.
Smart last year decided to discontinue production of the Roadster and Roadster-Coupe models as part of a restructuring programme.
Project Kimber is led by corporate troubleshooter David James, who last year failed to keep MG Rover out of Chinese hands.
The first James TVR will roll off the Bristol Avenue production line in April 2007.
Hi I'm a new member, but if the news is true it would be a big break for the company, maybe they can get rid of the old staid management and employ people who can bring the company out of its present decline.
As a vehicle it has a lot to offer but needs professional people to keep it up with the times.
My experience of the factory is one of poor professionalism.

I agree with TuscanTwo, this could be tariffic news for TVR - and hopefully bring the price of the "new" TVR into the sub-30k bracket, i.e. the "peoples champion" TVR that has been long called for. I suspect the reliability of the DaimlerChrysler engine will be better than the Speed6 too, and that can only be a good thing for TVR fans everywhere. I also hear (from a realiable source) that the new TVR will fly airbourne with the help of Madagascan "monkey-butt" leather wings; can't wait!
